Camp Perry 2018 Report

Post by Orpanaut on 7/11/2018, 9:50 am

Here are some impressions of the National Matches so far:

The weather is warm, dry and very sunny with a light breeze. I'd prefer to have things a little cloudier but this is about as good as it gets here.

Match administration is a bit... confused. Registration and squadding are not running as smoothly as in previous years. The range personnel are still excellent.

Only ranges 2 and 4 are running matches. Range 1 was a combination match/practice range yesterday but today it's back to practice only. I heard that there are about 500 shooters here.

Most of the usual suspects are at Commercial Row with the notable exceptions of Larry's Guns and Champion Shooters Supply.

The mayflies are out in force today and I had dozens land on me as I was walking from the ready line to the parking area.

Sure hope the weather holds up for a few more days.  I'd rather deal with mayflies than mosquitos.

Champion Shooters Supply is here now. They just set up a little late.

Good news: The shooting benches have been repainted.
Bad news: The team matches are being held up by turning target malfunctions on Range 4.

Hey is the custom glasses maker on Commercial Row this year?  Couldn't remember his name or location for a friend.

Today's forecast is for less sun but more heat and humidity.

One change from years past is that the targets are no longer pasted to thick sheets of brown cardboard. They are now printed directly onto thin sheets of white cardboard. This makes them much easier to carry and to slide in and out of the frames. There's also no longer a need to search through the stacks in the target trailers for "good" targets. The downside, I've heard, is that the new targets do not hold up well in the rain, but that hasn't been a problem this year.

The shooters' mess that used to operate across the street from the barracks is gone. The usual food trailers are still in business by the armorers' trailers.

The usual Perry winds finally arrived during the .45 team match yesterday. They weren't bad and the high masters still shot 290+.

The NRA awards are now given only to the top three finishers in each class in each match. Didn't they used to go down to seventh or eighth place in the bigger classes? And it looks like the NRA USA Civilian Pistol Team is defunct. It used to be that the top non-sponsored shooters in each civilian class got a hat and a jacket and a brick of Federal match .22 ammo. Now, if you finish fourth, you get nothing.

Conditions for the first three relays of .22 EIC were perfect: cool, calm and overcast. Now the sun is out and I am grateful for the awning set up on the berm behind Range 4.

I took a couple of minutes and broke down some numbers. 2018 was not a good year for moving up a class. You know what they say about those that can do and the rest of us. Some have fun and go shooting and the rest of us get to watch.

2700 shooters scores by classification and performance of class

Classification      number of shooters          number that shot their class         number that shot above class
High Master             52                                               5                                             NA

Master                    119                                              9                                              0

Expert                    192                                              101                                          2 both military

Sharpshooter            88                                              46                                           13

Somehow we made it through an entire week at Perry without a drop of rain. When I was at the National Trophy Team match I half expected a piece of hot brass to start a grass fire.
