.22 Short Anyone? Empty .22 Short Anyone?

Post by 230Ball 8/28/2012, 9:11 pm

Just getting back into the biz after a decade. Trusty (but dusty) 2700 line-up is a Hi-Standard Supermatic Citation (.22lr of course), S&W Model 15-6 for centerfire, and a Springfield 1911 ball gun for .45 and DCM built in the early '90s by Les Baer.
I was looking for a Model 52 for centerfire and got the wild idea to go for a Hammerli 280 with .22 and .32 wad kits. A bit pricey, but ideas are cheap. In the meantime, I stumbled across a Hammerli 230 in .22 short. Not what I was looking for, but pretty neat to consider adding to the stable. Having been out so long, is .22 short still in play for 2700 matches, and what about the 230? My weakness is the vintage precision stuff.
Many thanks in advance!

Check and see how it groups at 50 yards. Id be worried that you don't have enough velocity to get good accuracy on the long line.

A recent poll showed the 22 conversions (Marvel) and S&W Model 41 as the top choices for the 22 phase.

Thanks guys for the great responses. I'll probably let go of the 230, but will take it to the range and see how the shorts do at 50 yds slow fire.
I will check out the Marvel, as I don't recall it being in existence when I was competing. The only .22 conversion kits back then were to save money and not known for accuracy (IMO). What are shooters preferring now for centerfire? I used the Model 15 Combat Masterpiece because the Air Force considered it for other leg competitions and it was easy and cheap to handle. In my eyes the Model 52 was always the bomb back then. I eventually started using the 1911 in .45ACP for both centerfire and .45, but that made for a long day.

I think you will find a vast majority prefer the .45 in CF.

There are certainly more options now.
52 is certainly one. I just got mine back in service with a red dot. They are really tricky at 50yd.
9mm is an option. I have a 1911 9mm that is very accurate with a great trigger. You have to load a pretty hot load to group so that's a down side.
.32 is getting more play these days and some around here are gaining points in CF with it.

I'd say shoot the Supermatic Citation, and the 1911 .45 until just the right deal comes along. If you like the Hammerli, wait till the right 280 comes along with the .32 kit. I have a Marvel and a Citation and have been shooting the Citation for the last few matches and shot a 95 slow with it. Get back in the saddle with as many matches as you can!

Many thanks for the encouragement! I guess the bottom line is to simply get back in the saddle with what's in my barn, get my chops up, and take it from there.
This is a great forum and I look foreword to many more posts!

By the way, how did the Hammarli with the .22 shorts shoot at 50 yards?

Rob,
On leave at present and won't get to my outdoor range until around 9-10 Sep. I'm anxious to see how she performs; however, will take my trusty Hi-Standard to compare. I'll let you know!
