WTB - 1911 in 38 special FOUND... sort of

Post by Dcforman on Mon Oct 29, 2018 1:25 pm

First topic message reminder :

Maybe a long shot (ha ha), but I love the cartridge, would like to shoot it more often. Preference for a locked breech 1911, would definitely consider MKIII Colt Mid Range. Looking for a shooter, not a collection piece.

Thanks!

Dave

Edit - Gonna build one.

Don’t let that horrendous ugly stippling scare you away. You can go over that with a random print with a prick punch and mallet, C – clamp a steel straight edge as a border guide and touch up with cold blue. With a little patience you can have it looking really nice. Hopefully that cosmetic flaw will keep the price down for you

I’ve never seen a Giles gun with stippling like that. I wonder if owner did it?

I haven’t seen a Giles in a while. I thought they were fully stippled similar to military; full front strap from edge to edge with no gaps. Giles did very clean work.

'albertrichard123', suggestion, never post an email address out in the open in a forum, unless you're anxious to get tons of un-wanted email that you can't stop.  Instead of @ you can write "at".

Best format is  youremailname at gmail dot com, also same with phone numbers  507/one2three/567eight.

These formats help slow down the bots from harvesting your info, although they are getting smarter every day.

The absolute best way in a forum like this it to ask people to use the forum to send a "private message" to you for your contact info.

Yeah Jon...that stippling looks hinkey to me too. I have several Giles pistols and they look nothing like that!

Yeah. The frame dates correctly, but I'm a little leary of it. Either someone swapped the frame at some point, or they ordered it without stippling from Giles.

.....what Dave said, and add some extra spaces here and there, so it's not recognizable to (most of) the bots.   A PM as Dave suggested is the safest way.

This is stipling on Giles. Same as on a Clark.  This is a friend's Giles .38.

Just traded emails with a friend of mine who is familiar with Giles work and he did not think it was one of Giles guns either.  Might be a good gun though but as always buyer beware.

This is the front stippling on my Giles .38. My Giles .45 is the same.

I asked the seller about any known documentation, or if he knew the story behind the gun. His response:

Unfortunately not. The pistol is consignment brought to us for sale. But it comes from one of the biggest collection of Giles pistols in US.

I would think that Giles, like all craftsmen, changed and perfected his techniques over his active life.

I agree, but the frame dates to 1979, which is towards the end of his active career (I think!). I'm still watching the auction, as I'm more concerned with finding a good shooter than a gun with lineage. I'm interested to see how it goes.

That rear sight is unmistakably a Giles. That doesn’t mean it’s not a Frankengun though. There is no way he did that stippling. His stippling always had nice crisp borders.

Yup. Has anyone else seen an example of Giles work with an extended front sight?

Ok, here's a nice one, 1960 clark (SR) .38 special conversion. Extended front sight and ramped barrel. Looks mint. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets 2k or more, looks worth it. Hope price stays low for your sake!

Spoke with Logan Clark about their .38 Specials. They are no longer offering that option, and neither is Colt, as those guns require a steady diet of one particular load and will not function reliably with any currently over the counter available loads.

I also like the .38 Special Wadcutter and my Mod.52 is - for me- a better choice than a finicky 1911.
