WTB - 1911 in 38 special FOUND... sort of

Post by Dcforman on 10/29/2018, 1:25 pm

First topic message reminder :

Maybe a long shot (ha ha), but I love the cartridge, would like to shoot it more often. Preference for a locked breech 1911, would definitely consider MKIII Colt Mid Range. Looking for a shooter, not a collection piece.

Thanks!

Dave

Edit - Gonna build one.

Yeah, I've been watching that Clark. Considering the Giles with the ugly stippling went for $1200, I'm guessing it'll go for at least $1600. As you said, $2k wouldn't surprise me.

At any rate, after a lot of thought, I decided this is a great opportunity to build my first 1911. Jon basically told me building a 1911 in 38 special is the most challenging 1911 build, so I guess I'm starting off with a doosie. Well, there's no rush to get this done, so we'll see how it goes!

Thanks, all.

Dave

So true.. I just finished my 5" 38.. 1st one I've ever built and it is challenging compared to a 38 super which I find no harder to build than a 45.  just a matter of getting the right load and springs.

I finally got my special running with a 7lb recoil spring minus 2 coils... the gun is still very tight so I need to run a few boxes through it and then see where I'm at but the last two times practicing it has feed fine.

Caspian frame and  40 cal. slide( breach face is the closest to the 38 rim size) with slide mounted dot.. I used an old smith and Wesson 38 special barrel made for the services back in the early 60s... had two of them.. Also have a 45 barrel they made for the Air Force.. Today I'd probably go get a Kart or KKM and go from there.   modified 9mm extractor and a Standard style ejector( not extended).. Using Colt 38 special magazines of both styles with success.. Have triple K mag to try but it still needs work(smoothing and tuning feed lips)..

2.8 of WST and 148 HBWCs of various make.  hope to Ransom it sometime this winter

Sounds awesome. I, too, am going the Caspian route. It was indicated to me that Caspian will build a 38 special slide, which I assume has just a touch wider breech face. Going with a KKM 1:10 twist unramped barrel. Placing the orders this week!

M y 40 slide was very easy to open up... Didn't take much at all but do test it with multiple brands of brass
