Which one?

I can get a used 95% SA 1911A1 Longslide for $799 or a new SA 1911 Range Office $849.
Any help is appreciated.

Oh and my opinion would be the Range Officer over the long slide.

Definitely go with the Range Officer from Joe. The RO as a base gun is a better value and Joe is a reputable gunsmith who can provide future upgrades you might want.

I recant my gunbroker suggestion, go with Joe. If the RO is the same one he had back in september, its a good one, held it myself.

Thank you for the support gentlemen! Yes this is the same one and comes with a free trigger job. I wanted to see how well the internals were built and while I had it apart figured I might as well clean up the trigger.

The stock sear spring was left at factory tension and currently is has a 4.5 lb pull that feels like 3. That can be adjusted to a match legal 3.5 and it should feel pretty sweet. I would set the trigger pull to your liking prior to shipping.

Ok thanks guys for the responses please believe me I went to gun shop today intending to buy the RO. I may have made a mistake based on your comments but once I got that Longslide in my hand I couldn't resist. I hope this isn't one of those decisions I live to regret.

It's great to find a gunsmith that is concerned about the customer.

Just to clarify that I am not an official "gunsmith" that would be an insult to those that have spent the time and money to attend a school for gunsmithing and have devoted their lives to that trade.

Necessity is the mother of invention! There was a lack of anyone to work on 1911's for the purpose of shooting Bullseye locally so I started diving into them on my own and discovered that there are a fairly simple machine. Now I am very mechanically inclined and have many resources available to me and have developed many friendships and contacts that have helped me learn what I know.

I build 1911 lowers for use with 22 conversions and I can do some pretty nice triggers (I have a box full of bad trigger components from learning to get them right). That is where I draw the line, I have built a couple guns for myself but do not have the proper machines, tools or time to start working on any guns. There are many reputable people on this forum that I would certainly recommend for custom gun builds, repairs and accurizing.

So please do not put me in the same class as the Joe Chambers, Dave Salyer, KC Crawford, Ed Masaki or any of the true gunsmiths available to you.

I enjoy working on my 1911's, helping people out and building some lowers for conversions (which so far I have lost money on, a successful businessman I am not!).

I can't comment on Joe's business acumen - but I can wholeheartedly recommend his lowers for a marvel conversion. After 2 weeks playing with the one he built for me I'm already 20 points better than I ever managed with my MKII Ruger. The 50yd performance is scary good.

Of course - I now need to schedule a body transplant so that I can make full use of it
