What's it worth

Post by Henry Sapoznik on Sat Oct 27, 2012 4:01 pm

As partial payment of a long standing debt, a good friend just gave me his g'father's WW2 issue 1911 whose serial number indicates it was made in 1918.
Cannot locate any similar circa pistols on Gunbroker, GunsAmerica, etc so can't suss out what this obviously very used sidearm (and, according to family lore, Pacific theater issue with three "confirmed" kills) is worth. No bringback papers or any documentation.

Any suggestions?

You could start here:

Scroll down to the M1911 section. There area a lot of intricacies in trying to come up with
a valuation. These guys will give you some idea. Don't be put off if some of them seem
kinda grumpy...I think it's their nature! lol!

Good luck!

Hi JLK,

Thanks for the shout. I did look. Good start, as advertised (and they don't seem THAT grumpy....!)

Since it's a good friend, are you going to give him a higher-end valuation because of its story? A robot would value the pistol as a plain jane early model well-worn 1911 in the absence of other documentation.

Friends and monetary debt can get messy.

Indeed, but sadly, undocumented provenance (i.e. "family folklore") doesn't have a market value. I want to be fair but not extravagant. That being said: I want the pistol, but I want the friendship more.
