Alternatives

I am new to 1911’s. also new (1yr) of handgun shooting. But
jumping in with both feet trailing and at speed. My friend, distinguished rifle
and pistol, got me into bullseye shooting. I love the task of the precision of
the game. I also am a tool&die maker by trade, so the two go together..I
think.

I’m want to get a LB
wadcutter 1.5 slide mount
ultradot finished in
T-chrome.

BUT!

I do not know if I can even order one like that. And do not
know how I will stand the wait for one to be built. Any input on how long this
might take?

I would be open to a
P2 with 1.5 option, iron sights for now IF I could send it back to LB for a
slide mount if that could be done, AND how long would that take to have this
change done. Would I start at the back of the new gun line, or will the
turnaround be quicker? Where to get one.

I know I may never be able to shoot up to this guns ability,
but I also want it because of it’s very precise fit and finish….see diemaker.
It may be the last good gun I can afford.

Please school me on
all the alternatives’ that I do not know about yet. Again

Accuracy

Slide mount

Fit & finish

Wait time

Thanks’

Try calling a few builders and ask them.

Les Baer doesnt build chrome guns, he does sometimes sell SS, but ive never seen one in the target form, if they still have some left try Gil Hebard guns, no website,(309) 289-2700 you must call on the phone. they are shutting down since the owner passed but had several les baer bullseye guns in stock. If they dont have any, try champions choice, they usually have a few, otherwise its 6 months plus if you order from baer.

KC Crawford, who is also a member on here, is a respected gunsmith. Your easiest option may end up being: buy a stock Springfield GI/Military or RIA and send it to him to completely rework. http://kcskustomcreations.com/ (*edit* if you're in CA you need to send in your own pistol, if in other states, he can build on his blank caspians)
Jerry Keefer and Joe Chambers are two other gunsmiths, however their lead time may be quite long.

Mart,
Just an idea, watch on this list for someone selling a wad gun in the configuration you're looking for. You'll pick up a 1911 that was built to shoot bullseye and save some $$ in the process. BE guns rarely (if ever) get shot loose. Yes they get shot a lot, but our loads are carefully put together for accuracy, and those velocities and pressures are at the lowest end of the scale.

At the very least you have a well built 1911 that you will not be able to outshoot for years to come. During that time you can order your dream gun and not worry about the wait. When you get your ideal 1911, go ahead and sell the used one, chances are for what you paid for it or more.

Another thing I would recommend is to try as many different configurations as possible. Crisp trigger vs roll trigger. Long roll vs short roll trigger. Arched vs flat mainspring housing. Slide vs frame mount. Long trigger vs short trigger. I've done the same in my journey and have never had another shooter refuse to let me try his "baby". I've let dozens of guys try mine so they could try the difference between a short roll and crisp triggers (I shoot both).

You'll find some you like and some you don't, and you may find that what you didn't like at first, comes around to your "like list" later, I know I did.

Ask bunches of questions, no matter how basic it may seem. No question is stupid. We just asked it sooner than you did. Many times we forget to stress very important aspects of this, just because we've been doing them for so long it doesn't occur to us that everyone doesn't know.

In this list you have thousands of hours of dedicated practice time by hundreds of shooters who love this precision shooting sport. As well as contributions by some of the finest Bullseye gunsmiths that create our pride and joy's.

You could call Clark re: the GB pistol if it will reassure you. The Clark Co has it's roots in one of the early pistolsmiths, Jim Clark Sr. Family operated, they are shooters and understand what we are about. They stand behind their products and their work, which is tops. I will never forget my first look at his guns. A competitor opened his gunbox and started presenting a full set for the ref to weigh the triggers. The .22Hi Std Custom was a sight to behold!!

This is in no way negative to the other 'smiths mentioned. The advantage of the Clark is it's availability. Some of the items mentioned, arched vs flat hsg, frame mounts, can be switched for preference with although I would stick to the slide mount.

I have a Baer wadgun and you won't be disappointed. The Clark on GB looks good, too, at the price. You could try Gil Hebard and see if they have any in stock with a slide mount. That's where I got mine.

Its not a option for the bullseye guns, but im sure if he offers it then he could custom build what you want, but don't expect to use it before 2014 season, they are backed up with huge backorders right now they told me.

Hmm When I asked John at CJ1911Heaven, he didn't tell me I couldn't get it. He added it to the worksheet. I'll call Baer today because I'm still dying. He also said 6-10 month on the outside.

But if I must go thru the pain and suffering of waiting and the cost,I want something a bit different than a bellybutton gun.

It is possible to have a slide mount along with the target iron sights but requires cutting the mount and reducing the number of screws that hold the two pieces of metal together. Rock river arms has a combo slide mount with iron sghts built on it.

Re: chrome. Maybe look at it another way. It might reflect glare during a shooting string.

Like i said, if he offers the finish
then he would custom build it for you, just add additional cost and
build time. Bullseye is a game of accuracy, ive seen very pretty guns in
the hands of those who barely hit the black and ugly guns in the hands
of national champions. IMO, money is better spent on things that add
accuracy. At the end of the match its not how pretty your gun is its how
well you shot it.

In my opinion, the RRA combo mount is much too heavy to use with rings and a dot on top. You would need a stout powder charge or a really light recoil spring.

David,
I couldn't agree more. I'll always buy the best I can afford,I've learned many times over not to cheap out. In this case I'll kill two birds with one stone. A great gun that shoot very well, that also happens to look good to me. Plus..The granddaughter gets the Grand National, grandson the Baer.

Dewey,
I'll have to make up my mind on the mount.Irons are out for now.
Is the slide mount still the way to go? Les said go with the frame mount,I dunno know,is there a better slide mount out there than the Baer?

Far as mounts go its just personal preference, they take lighter loads with a frame mount, but most use the slide mount. Dot sits lower to the bore with a slide mount, plus it isnt in your way for take down like the frame mounts. Baer frame mounts are one of the best imo

I have been a frame mount guy for several seasons now. I am beginning to wonder if the faster impulse of the slide leads to tendonitis more quickly than a slide mount.

For now, it's just a hypothesis. I will say this with certainty. Don't ever shoot an entire ammo can of hardball 9mm in one training session. Nothing good can come of it.
