Thinking about a .22 upgrade Empty Thinking about a .22 upgrade

Post by Rob Kovach Thu Mar 07, 2013 8:20 pm

I've been thinking about a .22 upgrade from my old High Standard, which shoots just fine, but I just don't like the trigger on it. I have a Marvel, but I'm still thinking about something else.
I'm not really interested in spending $2500 for a feinwerkbau AW93 but I still want to try something more european.
I've shot some Sig Trailsides, and heard good things about IZH35s and noticed that you can get used ones of each for less than $800.
Between the Trailside and the IZH35 which do you think is better, or a better value for the money?

There is an IZH possibly coming available here

I would not even think IZH. And I would be skeptical of all Trailside except direct from Larry who should support it. I really would perfect the Marvel

Rob, Stay with the Marvel! I'm the one asking about parts for an IZH. They are nice pistols when they are working, but I'm finding more and more that parts are VERY difficult to get and these (at least mine) seem to need parts often.
If you really want a reasonably priced Euro type take a look at the Benelli's. I've heard some decent things about them.
Stay with the Marvel! /MK

Rob, rob, rob. What am I going to do with you?

Stick with the Marvel. We need to build you that dedicated lower so you have a correct platform to work with. The Marvel will run flawlessly when we're are done and if you have issues parts will always be available!

The only way I would ever consider going to a European style pistol would be to go all in with the Pardini set up and shoot the same platform all the way thru the Pardini is available in 22,32 and 45.

I haven't given up on the Marvel yet! I'm still sanding on it! It's just not ready yet. There are so many cool guns out there!!!

I switched to the Marvel from an M41 this year because I got a dedicated lower with a great trigger.

But, I understand the quest for more guns. I would talk to Larry about the trailside. His site is not so specific anymore. At one time he offered pistols with 'selected' barrels, his trigger etc. Now, they just seem to be the nicer version from Sig and you can buy a Larry trigger kit, scope mount etc.

You could also look for a Hammerli International. I picked one up reasonably recently. They are (at least mine is) a 208 platform.
Older Pardini is available sometimes and they have a great trigger if you are really looking for more of a European rake.

European rake is not the goal. I can't even shoot the angle of a standard ruger--there is to strength to my wrist at that angle. The international hammerli looks like a good grip angle. Thanks for the advice!

I think the advantages of a Euro gun is the 2 stage trigger, accuracy and reliability. At least that is what one gets with a Hammerli 208s. Scope mounting is pretty easy, as well. The cost is pretty high, but they seem to retain their value. I agree with the others that the IZH is not the way to go. Too many issues and no parts or support. My Marvel is mounted on a Springfield Armory Loaded lower and I have no functioning problems. It took a while for me to get used to the 3.5 lb. trigger, which I wanted, but now I'm happy with it.

Stay away from the izh35, great entry level gun, but it is a 200.00 item, thats what they sold for new, the metal they are made out of is sub standard and caused them to be ended because the bolts would peen down with use and start double firing, also now years after production was ended the spare parts have almost dried up.

I bought a used benelli MP95, and am really happy with it. Just shot a 774/900 with it at league tonight. Thank you DavidR for the buffer tip it's working quite nicely BTW.
Rob Kovach, I don't care for the euro-rake either. I am ordering a custom grip from Dick Horton that closely matches the grip angle of the 1911.

Rob is suffering a moderate case of "pistolitis selectus". We can help with these posts but this syndrome has a tendency to recur at the most inopportune times. Symptoms will likely persist until a purchase is made.
In severe cases the underlying pistol desired must be determined and purchased or recurrence is a certainty.
Infection often caused simply by observing pistols and is almost a certainty if the pistol is handled or worse yet shot and the 10 ring struck
