Pauses between Range Commands Empty Pauses between Range Commands

Post by xmastershooter 5/20/2013, 3:49 am

I finally downloaded Anatoly's range commands and will find this to be most helpful. Since the App shows the countdown of seconds, I easily noted the pauses between the commands to be consistently around 3 seconds, as I had always thought this to be proper. However, there was only 2 seconds after the "Ready on the firing line!" command and the buzzard. If I'm not mistaken, I thought all the pauses should be 3 seconds to provide consistency for the shooters' anticipation.
To my surprise after reviewing the NRA Pistol Rules booklet, there was no mention of the pause time at all between the commands and it only states that "In approximately 3 seconds the targets will be exposed, or the signal to commence firing will be given." I have shot in matches with a variety of pauses before the order to fire was given, mainly verbal commands and not the automated turning targets.
Comments from match directors? What do you do to keep it consistent?

Good question. I've always wondered the same thing.
Are you supposed to wait 3 seconds from the end of the last word you said in the previous command or wait 3 seconds from when you started the previous command?

The only pause that counts is after the end of the word "line" 3 seconds is the amount of time in a perfect world that the targets should face, but ive seen ones that were fast and many that were slow, ive also seen guys fire at a target that hasn't even faced because the practiced so much using a command cd or mp3 and and conditioned themselves to shoot at that exact point, most times it works fine, but sometimes it ends up with a miss.

Pauses between Range Commands Empty Re: Pauses between Range Commands

The three-second mention in the rule book is a bit out of the way, only a "Note" and located just prior to 10.8 (which is blank). It reads:

"Note: Commands controlling the start of the firing sequence commencing with "Ready on the Right" should have approximately a 3 second interval between firing line commands."

In practice, it is much easier to time the turning based on the utterance of "line," rather than trying to make it after the word is spoken. But, "line" is so short it shouldn't make a timing difference.

Two things to consider:

1. If you are calling the line, remember to add the pauses consistently. Also, I suggest using the same commands, spoken the same, for the Slow Fire stage. This gives the competitors a chance to hear how you will call Sustained Fire. Then, a brief, "Commence Firing." can be called. You shouldn't need to tell shooters again, how long they have. If you're using the Slow Fire commands from the rule book, you've already stated, "ten shots slow fire, ten shots in ten minutes,..." (or, five, if appropriate).

2. If you are shooting, try to acquire a familiarity with how the caller will call, but don't get wrapped up in the calling itself. If you do, you aren't concentrating on shooting and your experience will be less than pleasant. As my coach/mentor used to tell me, "If the target turns, shoot!"

Pauses between Range Commands Empty pauses between commands

There is a note at the end of the range commands section stating that there should be approximately 3 seconds between commands after "Ready on the right". -- Russ OR
