Post by keyhole Wed Mar 05, 2014 4:02 pm

Could anyone tell me of a material used to buildout the back and sides of a grip. I want to know if there is a material out there  that can be used  but then removed with little to no effect to the original grip. Any help would be appreciated.

I've used Minwax wood putty to add a bit to a set of Herrett National Match grips for a S&W Model 41:

The wood putty doesn't stick very well without something to really seal it in (Motorcycle Dan says he's used superglue to seal it), so when I added it to my Hämmerli 280's wood grip, it was easily removed later when I decided I didn't like it.

I've also used FIMO polymer 'clay' (that, once you get its shape how you want it, you bake in an oven to cook out the plasticizers and then it is basically a plastic) to make a grip adapter for a Ruger Redhawk and to add some stuff to a Hämmerli SP20 plastic grip:

(not very easy to see, since it's black clay on a black grip)

It is a bit more permanent, however.

Go to Lowes or home depot and get JB Weld KWIK WOOD, epoxy putty, red white and black package, just cut off what you need and work the center section (white)and outer section (brown)in your hand till its a consistent color apply, shape and let dry for a few minutes. its in the paint section, it is easy to mold, sticks great, dries fast and can be sanded and painted if you want.

I'll second the qwik wood suggestion.  I used some on my grip two years ago and it hasn't budged

I've used Morini Grip Paste, as well as, epoxy putty with good results.

Morini grip paste that costs so much is nothing but standard auto bondo colored brown. Its smell is the giveaway, I was in auto related business for twenty years, the smell is something you never forget, save your money and buy a quart of bondo for 6-8 bucks, soon as you open the can you will see  other than color its the exact same thing.

Pro Poxy20 Single stick two-part epoxy compound mixes quickly and easily and adheres to metals, masonry, wood, glass, ceramics and some plastics.  Resistant to many acids, caustics, fuel oil gasoline and other solvents. When cured in 20 minutes, may be drilled, sanded, filed and painted .

One stick runs about $7-9.00 and should do 2 grips.  Just knead until mixed, then put it on where you want it and squeeze the grip.  Sand or cut off excess.  The next grip I do I'm going to try texturing it before it cures.

Sounds like the same stuff JB sells, they have brown called wood and black called steel, both are the same, mix the two parts of the stick and put on the grip.
