Weaver bases, number 15 I think, allow mounting without a rail. Mount the bases directly on the slide.

Clark or rock river arms scope rails are what everyone uses, clark is available from brownells. Rock River sells direct from their website.

Al Marvel still  markets the old Mike Curtis Marine Corp style rib with the closed top.. This keeps those odd pieces of brass from hanging up on exposed bases and rings..installed with # 8 Torx heads, it's without peer...and it's the only one will I use for slide mounted optics..

The barrel in lockup is not parallel to the top of the slide.  The Clark mounts I used years ago, and the one or two that I milled myself, accounted for this with some built in "drift" or angle in elevation.  If your mount doesn't have this, its possible your red dot might not have enough elevation adjustment to zero.  I haven't looked at a recent Clark mount or the Rock River mount, which is I believe steel and fairly heavy.
