How to run relays ?? Empty How to run relays ??

Post by rcmillerjr 10/5/2013, 2:58 pm

I am just getting back into Bullseye shooting after a 30 plus year absence.  I am trying to set up a program for our local club and I know that we are going to wind up with more shooters that we have firing points.  I cannot, for the life of me, remember how relays are operated.  Would someone be kind enough to enlighten me as to the process, and the timing.  Thanks so much.

Most match directors will have each shooter fire all of their rounds then box up and get the next relay on the firing line.  That's usually how it's done for everything from a single NMC to a 3-gun 900 to a full 2700.

As far as timing goes, we can run a relay of a 3-gun 900 indoors in 35-45 minutes when we have the match directors scoring or have the shooters do the scoring after the shooting is done.

Is this going to be indoors or outdoors?     How many relays do you think you need and is it for a 900, an 1800 or a 2700?

It generally takes about 4 to five hours to run a full 2700 indoors.   People need a couple of short breaks for snacks, bathroom etc.

If a 900 plan on spacing them 90 minutes apart.
I have been to some great matches where in order to get thirty shooters through an entire 2700 held over a weekend, they ran five or six 90 shot relays each day for two days.
The only issue is that sometimes people will still be shooting rimfire when someone else is shooting centerfire or 45,   But it sure accommodates a lot of shooters and is a very social friendly way to run a match.

Wow, what a great problem! Most match sponsors have just the opposite problem. Not enough entries. I hope your level of participation justifies building more shooting stations.

Thanks to everyone who responded.  I think I have it pretty well figured out now.

I'm 65 and started shooting bullseye last Jan. We have 8 stations on the indoor, 50' range in a postal league (well actually, it is an email league, LOL).

We shoot two matches per evening apiece. When the first 8 shooters finish, the next 8 take their turn.

I'm an old HP shooter who's never actually been to a BE Pistol match yet.

Can't count hanging out with Dad when I was 4 to 8 years old.

Outdoors, what about long line vs. short line? I would have expected to have every one shoot all their SF first, then have them run their TF and RF back-to-back after the target change...

But then again, it ain't like re-centering SR targets for the 300 prone stages, either...

Grumpy,

Getting the shooters to pack all of their things to bring new shooters on the line takes a lot of time.  Since shooters aren't accustomed to taking a long break between slowfire and timed fire, it wouldn't be well received to run relays that way.
