Pelican range box Empty Pelican range box

Post by Jkvandal 4/22/2014, 6:40 pm

I saw the picture of the Pelican pistol box with scope mount in this thread:
https://www.bullseyeforum.net/t725-show-your-bullseye-or-shooters-box

I'm planning on building one and wondering if there are any other pictures out there?

Also, seems like the 1550 is a good size to go with for a 2-gun box, and I don't mind carrying a separate box/bag for the ammo, but what other sizes have you all seen? Thanks!

looks just like a gun ho box without the covering, which is the same design as the precision gun box design, should be easy to find pics of any of those maybe even plans.

check out his site, he gives all dimension's and sells hardware kits and even gun box kits, might be of some help to you.

Rob,
I figured that out when he slapped my wrist on my first post. However IMHO someone needs to talk him out of this choice. They are a just not as handy as a "real" box on the line.Everything needs to be easy to get to and these boxes while quite bulky have very little space for extras.Yes,they are great for traveling. But if you build a two gun box then you better plan on building two of them.Unless you are a masochist and plan on shooting hardball for all your matches you need places for at least 4 pistols when you go to Perry.Five if you have a centerfire pistol other than your 45 wad gun.22,CF,45,EIC and Reeves.Yep that adds up to 5.

Pelican range box Empty Re: Pelican range box

Len,

I apologize if you thought I was slapping you on the wrist.  I typed that up real quick when I was doing other things and it probably did come across a bit more harsh/terse than intended...I should have responded more tactfully.  I have picked up a lot of knowledge from my lurking on this forum and finally decided to pipe up and ask a question and that's not how I intended to come across, again I apologize I came across that way.

Thank you for your input on the pistol box.  Currently my plan is to only shoot two pistols, or actually just my 1911 hardball with a marvel conversion.  I guess you can call me a masochist, but I'm shooting with the Navy Marksmanship team and would like to stick with .22 and hardball until I can earn the distinguished badge, at which point I may allow myself to use some other pistols.  As shooting is not my only job for the Navy, I could very well get stationed somewhere else in a year or two that would require that I fly to matches, which was another reason I was leaning towards the Pelican case.  I did have a concern about available space/storage though, which is a very valid point as I can see a lot of wasted space.

Thank you again for your input and your helpful reply even after my comment earlier.

Rob,

That is exactly the type of example I'm looking for, and the only picture I have been able to find so far.  I was hoping there were other examples out there somewhere...

Sorry I too thought he wanted something like the picture you posted, the pelican boxes are what the military guys often use out of necessity  because they meet airline requirements. So this would work great for you.
You should have what you need that picture tells it all, it has a gil hebard scope mount available from bullseye gear .com and a hold open hinge you can get at home depot, the rest is just a standard pelican box best prices seem to be on ebay for them.

John,
Not a problem.Glad I was able to help a little. I shot for the AMTU and they furnished the pistols and boxes. They made us shoot hardball for every match.Best way to train.

Give me a call if you'd like to build a case similar to the Pelican-style. I can walk you through it in a phone call.

You may not care for the result in the long run and may decide to build a Pachmayr-style afterwards. Why, you ask? Because the horizontal style tends to pick up everything, including unburnt powder, cases, and other crud flying around. I sell 200-300 boxes per year, but relatively few are the horizontal style.

I have one I use on occasion, but it is very narrow in order to minimize its pickup of dirt and debris.

Greg,

That is a great thought and one that I did not consider. I'm still mulling it over.  The only real advantage I see is the airline travel, which isn't critical for me at this point, but may be in a couple years.  If I decide to proceed with the Pelican build I'll give you a call, thanks!

Pelican range box Empty Pelican or other Modified Boxes

Post by jerry lehrer 5/18/2014, 7:24 pm

John,

Ed Masaki of Hawaii is an expert on the modification of dust-proof and water-proofed cases like the Pelican or other Camera Carrying cases.  He
turns them into fine pistol boxes.

He is a frequent contributor to this site and is a fine gunsmith to boot!
