Unfilled lube grooves Empty Unfilled lube grooves

Post by kwixdraw Fri Sep 05, 2014 12:54 pm

I've been sizing and lubing my bullets on a Star using Magma's blue, hard lube. I have been using a heat lamp to keep the machine warm enough for the lube to flow but this heating/cooling cycle leaves bullets without a complete fill in the groove and then others with extra squeezed out ahead of the groove onto the nose of the bullet. I have recovered some of these bullets and found lube still in the groove. It make me wonder if the fill of the lube groove could cause fliers or not. I'm thinking about going to a bit softer lube to get the grooves filled easier.

I used to use the Thompson hard blue lube.  I switched to White Label Lube BAC about 2 years ago.  Much softer and doesn't require much, if any, heat.  It stays in the lube groove also, the blue lube I was using had a tendency to peel out occasionally if I didn't have the heat up high enough.

I went with the White Label 2500 because I plan to shoot some cast rifle bullets too.  Did you notice an increase in smoke?
I haven't cleaned out the machine yet so haven't used the new lube.

Yes, there's definitely more smoke.  But you only notice that indoors in rapid fire.  Not enough to affect your ability to pick up the dot & target.

Use Carnauba Red. If the Magma blue is the stuff the commercial casters use, it should only be used to flux your lead.
The lube groove must be filled completely. You don't have to fill all the lube grooves on a multi-groove bullet and often you'll get better accuracy by only filling the bottom lube groove(s).
You could try as-cast and tumble lube, but most folks won't try. LLA will smoke a little, but that shouldn't be a problem for Bullseye--it never was for me even in IPSC and PPC.

use as soft a lube as you can get, the only reason the casters use the hard lube is so it stays put during shipping.

I sized a batch of H&G 130s this morning with the White label 2500+  My first impression is that its harder to see if the groove is filled or not since the lube is such a light color.  The lube does NOT need heat. It gets all over without being thinned by heating. If there is an imperfectly filled out drive band on a bullet, you will know it because this lube will find it and squirt out and find somewhere to go. Nice thing is that its easier to clean up the loaded rounds compared to any excess of the hard lube.

I have been using Mike's 6-6-6-1 lube with excellent results in my Star. Its a soft lube, doesn't require any heat and is very easy to make.

6 parts Gulf brand paraffin
6 parts Vaseline
6 Parts Beeswax
1 Part grated Ivory bar soap

Melt the paraffin & Vaseline, add the soap, lower the heat and add the beeswax last.

You can find more info if you do a search on the cast boolits forum. You can pour it into 1" diameter x 4" long PVC pipes and make your own sticks or pour it directly into your lube reservoir and allow it to cool.
