1911 Extractors Empty 1911 Extractors

Post by Sa-tevp 7/4/2015, 10:19 am

Who makes a good 1911 extractor? I have a 1975 Colt, a 2012 Colt and a SA Range Officer and they all have extractors that touch the brass in the extractor groove with the tip of the extractor. I'm also chasing a lot more brass than my fellow shooters. I would expect with so many companies in the market that there are a few that would be a bit shorter and also be tighter on the firing pin stop.

Are there some brands of extractors that are better for precision shooting than others?

EGW makes an extractor without the slide stop groove so you can position the hook to suit your slide-breech face dimensions. I haven't a clue if this really makes things better but they do make it, so someone thinks so.

I am one that's knows so...SmileSmile I have been welding(silver soldering) a shim into the slot, and machining the slot to pull the tip back.. It is very rare to find an extractor that is the proper length for each gun....
By the way, I am not alone on this, and the reason EGW makes the gunsmith fit extractor is for those that take time to fit the extractor..

What are your thoughts about side loading the extractor. Weigand sells a gauge that is supposed to allow you to set the tension and other people advocate that as long as the case is held in place by the hook it's tight enough. I could see where you would want as little side load as possible given that you do so much to make your chambers concentric and properly dimensioned. Thanks again for sharing your experience.  Oh, What about the external extractors? Are you in favor of those or are they just another can of worms?

I run as little tension as possible.. Cam out should be held to a minimum.. The case only has to move the extractor enough to pass by as it slides up the breechface.. The more it has to move it, and the more tension it has to overcome, the greater the chance for negative issues..The same with the external.. One draw back to externals.. It depends where the design engineers locate the pivot pin.. Has a lot to do with the leverage the spring exerts on the case.. and influences extraction, and feeding..

AMU and the Marine Corps Pistol Team are both using Caspian extractors at the moment.  From spending time with the AMU gunsmith they are very happy with EGW parts as well.

I put a EGW finished extractor in my Series 80 Gold Cup and a Wilson Combat Bullet Proof in my Range Officer. Both pistols have EGW firing pin stops in them and the extractor firing pin stop notches needed to be widened, which I did by removing material from the forward edge. The tip of the EGW extractor needed attention to keep it from contacting the brass in the extraction notch of the brass, but the Wilson was good to go. Both extractors were a few thousandths shorter than the factory extractors they replaced.

Next is to see if more brass goes into my CMM net than before. I'm not expecting perfect but would like get the brass chasing to the same level as the others around me.
