Never had an issue with Federal primers in a 650 myself.  Actually prefer them for some calibers, like .38 special.

I would not be surprised to find that is is another of the many "explanations" or "reasons" for the typical ID-10-T error.

Total garbage.  I have an XL650 and loaded over 2,000 Federal primers in .45 ACP. Not a single issue.

Dillon XL650 and Federal Pistol Primers Empty I, OTOH, have consistent trouble with Federal 150 primers and my Square Deal!

Post by Ed Hall 10/8/2014, 7:52 pm

I can't talk XL650, but I routinely have trouble with Federal 150 primers in my Square Deal.  I almost have to put on a surgical mask and move to a "clean room" to use Federal primers with my system.  I have to pull a cleaning patch through both the pickup tube and magazine tube and then look into them to ensure there is not the slightest bit of debris on the inside wall.  Then I have to make sure the tray I'll use for flipping and loading the tube is "sterilized" before I dump out the primers.  I have found them to be quite a pain, personally.

Ed: I've never had a problem with Federal primers in my SD either. And I loaded thousands on it before going to 650. I did find the SD sometimes needed adjustments for the primer feed due to the plastic push through design of that system.

Odd, Federal 150's work great in my SDB. I've used Win LP in the past, but the new sleeve I got at Perry this year has been nothing but trouble - they get jammed in pickup tubes and I get 10-20 flipped or crushed primers out of 100 while loading.

my 1050 has no problem with federal, and never heard of anybody that did, except your guy, sounds like he has the problem. here is a tip, from time to time take the feeder tube out and run a 22 cal snake thru it to remove residue from the primers and things will feed smoother

Ive never found federal to be more sensitive than any other, loaded thousands of 45 with them. some say cci are a little harder but never had a problem with them either, might blow one today but so far never had a primer blow in a press, I have had a few crush flat in my 1050 but they didn't go off.

IMO you are over thinking the stuff that doesn't matter. Ive loaded thousands of rounds with CCI,winchester,Remington, and federal primers, I may have had one or two bad primers in all of that. I did have some that had light strikes due to the primer not getting fully seated but it wasn't a primer issue it was a press issue that I got resolved. Now there may be some of these cheap off brand proimers that have showed up that are more problematic but I don't use that crap so I don't know. If your worried call Dillon and ask them what they recommend and buy those.

Dillon XL650 and Federal Pistol Primers Empty Federal Primers

Post by Dipnet 10/24/2014, 10:57 am

I use a 550 and the only problem I've had with federal primers during loading results from small debris builds up on the shell plate, which invariably finds its way into the primer cup. Federal primers are relatively soft and vulnerable to being deformed by debris. I suspect the 650 is likewise. The solution is to keep the shell plate clean (keep an air can handy).

However, for match loads, I've switched to hand priming where I can feel the primer contact the bottom of primer cup and hand-seating rarely deforms primers. Hard primers like CCI are not vulnerable to deforming. I don’t know of anyone experimentally comparing primers (keep all other variables ~equal) to determine their accuracy effects. I'm sticking with my inner prejudice and shoot Federal primers because I believe they are more accurate. Dipnet

I actually did test CCI (300), Federal Gold Medal (GM150M), Federal standard (150), Remington (2-1/2) and WLP.  This was many years ago.  At that time, the Remington primers gave the smallest Extreme Spread and Standard Deviation.  I don't have my notes handy, but I seem to recall a difference in mean velocity, but can't verify that part.

Ed,
Did you analyze the data? Were the data published? Might be a fun project to replicate, but presently, I lack "spare" shooting or reloading time. It is all squeezed in between work, chores, all the other stuff standing between me and fun. Thanks, dipnet

Hi Dipnet,

Back when I bought my Chrony, I was doing all kinds of testing and saving all kinds of data and doing all kinds of things.  But, what I discovered was that even though the Remingtons had a better mathematical signature, the WLPs proved a tighter group.  Instead of trying to find a reason satisfactory to my belief structure, I just bought WLP primers for my competition ammo.  I also set the Chrony aside at a later point and in fact, stopped doing much testing to opt for training.

A last thought:  My testing of the primers was done so long ago, that the manufacturers have probably changed something by now, that would alter the results of all the testing I did back so long ago.

Having said all that, there is a spread sheet of some testing I did a few years ago on my web site.  Tell it NO when it asks whether it should update from other files.  I don't know where that link BS came from.  You also don't need to allow the macros to see the data.  I need to find a Windows computer and update the file from Excel 95 to something newer, but I'm in the hole with round tuits...
