Lee machine rest for pistols for sale on Ebay

Post by Rob Kovach on 11/23/2014, 9:23 pm

First topic message reminder :

I'm not the seller on this rest, but one of you might like the use of this rest.  I have found it to be extremely useful for my load and gun testing.

I believe it's easy to use occasionally without practice--while a ransom rest requires significant practice to produce repeatable results.

Once caveat: the magazine insert adapter for the rest makes it single shot and doesn't allow the same results that are consistent with the gun with the magazine stripped off of the magazine.

While this rest is useable as is, a rest adapter can be fabricated to lock on to the grip bushings so you can run the rest with a magazine in the gun.

I made my adapter a little different. I wanted to mount it to the right side of the pistol so I didn't have to reach around to drop the mag. I made it out of 1/4" stainless so wasn't worried about strength. It turns out that when S&W made the 952's they went to 1911 size holes so all I had to do was drill another hole (3 different size bits and depth) and it works great for that pistol also.

Hmm. And oops. This probably should have went under equipment. But all the neat pictures were here. Shocked

The left side mount (ala Rob's) puts the center of thrust to the right of the center of mass, so the works should rotate clockwise and clean out of the base, away from the base roll pin.  My example is dogged up where it had been crashed into the pin repeatedly by the previous owner.

My first attempt was too ugly to post here.  But considering the fix-it shop I was working in had no functioning clamps (not even one!)  it was a miracle I got anything made.  Later I discovered the grip bushings dimensions between my two 1911's was not uniform.

If I make another I would try and get the gun off the right side as low as possible, (and with the aid of clamps I would get the horizontal centered).  That would put the bottom grip screw through two levels of grip panel metal and angle iron, which should make it even more rigid.

My mount looked really nice the first time I welded it. Then I found that I had it mounted so low that I couldn't grip the pistol. Added another Inch or so then welded it again. The third time I had to weld it was when I didn't have enough down angle for the 952 and just barely enough for 1911's. I hope this was the last weld but I may want to give it some more forward rake after hitting the range again. I decided on right side mount when I realized I was going to have to remove all my right side grip panels to use the mount. The Herrett Nationals made them unusable.

no offense but has anybody done a side by side comparison between the Lee and a Ransom Rest. I might consider these if I saw some results, because I certainly don't want to pay the going rate for a RR.  I have to think there is a reason that most builders use a RR. Can anybody show me a builder that uses Lee as their rest? Jerry, Jon, KC...anybody??

They will not duplicate a properly setup and operated R.rest, IMHO.

If properly used, the lee's are better than sandbags, but, I don't like their semi auto adapters. Most have adapted them.

and then, the choice is yours..

But, Both Rob and I have heavily modified grip adapters for our Lee's.
So, if your a welder/machinist.  a lee will work for you.
