Bullet Kipping Past Rifling? Empty Bullet Kipping Past Rifling?

Post by beeser Sat Dec 13, 2014 2:57 pm

When a bullet is fired through a rifled barrel is all of it captured by the rifling like a bolt through a nut or does the bullet skip past part of it?

If everything is right it should start turning as it contacts the rifling, but there is always a lag (physics) albeit ever so slight.

Possible problems that could change this:
Bullet diameter incorrect too big or too small
Leading edge of rifling too abrupt / bad chamber
Poorly done rifling
Over pressure - round too hot
...... I'm sure there are others

A soft alloy lead bullet may skid.

No, the question goes to any bullet.  It's just to satisfy general curiosity.

Bullet dia, velocity, weight and groove depth all contribute to stability.

maybe a better analogy would be
a bar of material being fun thru a threading/forming die  really really really fast

Actually, compared to a nut and bolt it is very very sloooow.
1 turn in 12 inches vs. say 1 turn in . 040 of an inch

A rotationally stable bullet will have a resistance to forced rotation.  Many factors involved in the details.

So, the bullet rotation is 60,000 rpms as it leaves the barrel based on a muzzle velocity of 1000 ft/sec and a 1:12 twist?

MV X 720/Twist Rate = RPM

1000x60=60,000 rpm

So, at 60,000 rev/min it seems to me that rotational stability is important?
