LSWCs (Penn / Missouri / Magnus / Zero) Accuracy Empty LSWCs (Penn / Missouri / Magnus / Zero) Accuracy

Post by JayhawkNavy02 1/6/2015, 4:57 am

After reading the pet loads by the Masters it looks like Zero and Magnus are very popular, but I didn't see much mention of Penn or Missouri bullets.    The price for all is about the same for 185 gr or 200 gr LSWCs and I've heard of other shooters using Penn bullets with success. Are the Magnus/Penn superior over Penn/Missouri LSWCs?

Cheers,
Derek

I had bad dealings with the owner of Penn, not a pleasant experience.
Magnus are very good as are zero, Missouri I have not used but ive heard mixed reviews of good and bad, mostly damaged bullets when shipped. Laser cast is another top notch bullet maker.

My first choice are Zero swaged 200gn L-SWCs. Next would be Precision Bullets swaged 200gn coated L-SWCs. For cast bullets, I can't beat mastercastbullets.com 200gn L-SWCs.

Roger,

Is there any logic to weather 200 or 185 he are selected?

Get the 185's less recoil and usually less cost due to less material.

I can't speak to the quality or accuracy of any of the bullets mentioned but I did receive a bad batch of sloppily lubed bullets from Missouri once.  To their credit they replaced the defective bullets quickly.  I haven't had a bad experience with Penn yet but after placing an order with them recently I'm getting the impression that service with them will not be their strong point.  They seem to have that "we'll get to it when we get to it" attitude on orders despite being paid up front.  The only reason I ordered from Penn is they had the 9mm bullets I wanted otherwise my money would've spent at Magnus.  I order everything else from Magnus and get good service there along with the best looking bullets purchased to date.  My second choice would be Zero (nice looking bullets too) only because I like dealing with Magnus.  Again, I can't speak for consistency in bullet weight, diameter and accuracy but this has been my experience so far.

Support Magnus Bullets ,he's a forum member and will give you a discount if you mention that you're a Bullseye-L member when you order.
At least that's the rumor I heard. Laughing

Magnus also has a military discount, which I appreciate, and want to support those who support us.

From speaking with several BE shooters it sounds like 185gr LSWCs  on the 25 yard line is common due to the lower recoil.  I didn't hear anything about accuracy differences between the two weights.

I just Ransom Rested some Magnus 200 gr cast LSWC. Got 1.75" with assorted brass. I'll be using them from infinity and beyond :p)
I really like them. I personally don't find much difference between 185's and 200's recoil wise. I think the 200's are more forgiving for the 50 yd line. I recently switched from 185's and probably won't go back.

I have been using PENN for decades.. Bob had some production issues when the component crunch was in full swing, as did nearly everyone.. I can't count the number I have used over the years, but it is well over the 6 figure area.. I once loaded my truck and then a two ton trailer with .45 and drove it all back to Va. My lady shooter has won a lot of very serious matches and is a 2600 shooter, using nothing but PENN Bullets..She is featured on Bob's website..
In the old  STAR days, I quickly became anti swage... Cast is the only all lead  bullet construction I'll consider..

Jerry, what was/is your issue with swaged?  I shot a lot of STARs in the old days, both 45 and 38.

Leading...severe at times.. 38 and 45.. both calibers leaded heavily. I stopped using them long before they ended their operation.
During PPC matches, many of us pulled a Lewis Lead  Remover thru at the prep period on the 50 yard line. Switching to Remington, 148 HBWC,  washed and lubed with liquid alox was a huge plus.  So I am reluctant to use swaged. Perhaps some of the newer manufacturers are fine.. But I am  not switching during the good times.. I couldn't be happier with PENN.
One thing I failed to explain.. I started shooting BE in 1962, on local levels.. Nearly, every one shot cast lead in those days..

Uhh, never had a problem with swaged bullets. I know that some, if not all, swaged bullets from the "small guys" are 92/6/2 alloy. Even running Hornady 140gn .38 Cowboy swaged RNFP with hot loads in my .38 Supers didn't produce any leading.
For the last decade, since I basically stopped casting and started using commercial bullets, I have used LLA for any lots of bullets that lead (and, so far, they have all been cast bullets).
Again, if you do get leading, look to Precision Bullets—coated swaged lead bullets that are very consistent in weight and geometry (and I have never seen a damaged one after over 10,000 bullets).

I cannot speak for Penn bullets since I never used them mostly because I have read a lot of negative reviews.

I have used Missouri bullet 185 and 200 SWC overall not too bad, a decent looking bullet but
very inconsistent weights. Each box I ever received has close to a 5 grain variation with
the average being about 2 full grains per bullet. When I first started weighing them I thought my scale
was broken. These wide variations were not one offs but found throughout the box.

Lately I have been using 200 gr SWC from Apex Bullet

http://www.apexbullet.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=53

These have been working really well for me lately and the weights have been pretty consistent.

These folks support Law enforcement, Military and local clubs.
