scales cleaning and checking

I have the Ohaus 10-10 powder scales they are about 35 years old and have worked great. but feel they need to be cleaned the beam has sings of residue from handling over the years, and they seam to be a little inconsent on repeatability.
What due you use to clean your beam and bearings with?
After cleaning I recheck with known weight check set ( I have the Lyman set), but .5gr is the smallest and I would like to have a set of .1 weights to use just for fun and to use with dads old balance beam that did not have a graduated scale on it and you had to have the exact weight to put in the pan and zero buy moving the brass weight on the beam. (dad had them in little round Lyman tin but it is lost).

Apparently this guy comes highly recommended for calibrating this type of scale.

thanks beeser , I don't need to calibrate it just clean beam and bearing surface it is just some thing that needs done from time to time.

I haven't used a beam scale in a number of years, just digital. That being said, I've used Kroil to clean and lube everything from a gun barrel to a music box that wouldn't work. It would be worth a try.

BE Mike I don't think you want to use any thing that would leave a film, no oil need something like Lyman recommends acetone to clean weight check set.

I use acetone on my Ohaus 10-10 bearings and the pivots on the beam. Has been working great for me for 35+ years now. I keep the plastic cover on it except for when I'm actively using it to keep the dust down to a minimum.

I use a toothbrush--no chemicals.
