Need Indoor Pellet Trap Recommendation Empty Need Indoor Pellet Trap Recommendation

Post by dstates Tue Mar 17, 2015 7:52 pm

I just purchased my first air pistol (IZH-46M) and I want to set up a pellet trap in my basement.  Does anyone here have a recommendation on brand or model?  I'm up for making my own, if you have done that and like it, could you share some pictures?

Thanks,
Doug

Try rubber inside to reduce the noise.

A wood box with a steel plate at a 45 degree angle, stops the pellet. The cardboard on the front contained any splatter or dust made from my Feinwerkbau air pistol & helped keep the noise inside the box. A high velocity rifle would make a sonic boom, if the pellet is above the speed of sound. For target work, high velocity is not needed.

Build a wood box and put duct seal in the back. I used this video as an inspiration.

I just use and 18" cubic box filed with shredded paper, costs nothing and works just fine

I shoot my air pistol into a tub of plumber's putty.

These are great ideas.  I like the duct seal and plumber's putty ideas as it would be quieter than just a metal trap.  Looks like I have a project to do.

I have one similar to the one displayed in the photo. I bought mine from Don Nygord. I have used it for over 15 years and I'm not even starting to wear it out. I just screwed mine to the shelf of a metal shelving unit, put up some clamp-on lights (one on the gun and one on the target) with bright bulbs. The trap makes changing targets quick. It fits Edelmann and Kruger single bull targets and they just slide in. I keep my supply of targets on the shelving unit. I use a cabinet, like the following one, to act as a bench for a spotting scope and to store pellets, etc.: http://www.amazon.com/Sterilite-01408501-2-Shelf-Cabinet-Platinum/dp/B001BMN0CQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1426688324&sr=8-2&keywords=storage+cabinet+rubbermaid

A cardboard box full of balled up rags works well and is quiet.

Hard to get the fired pellets out of duct seal, i would think, after looking at the video??  Not easy to reclaim for the casting pot?

I used a plastic crate  filled with paper, rags or even bubble wrap works fine, tape a squeeze clip to the top to hold targets,  works great

I use a plastic bin like the Post office uses with indoor/outdoor carpeting stapled to the bottom.  Cardboard stapled over the top and resting on it's side has worked well for me.

You build up a layer very fast then every so often you peel off the layer in a big clump. Yes some pellets stay in the duct seal but that's your base to build up the next layer.

I made an open sided plywood box with a piece of cardboard tacked to the open side that I pin targets to. Where did you find an IZH-46? Tough to find right now with the Russian trade embargo.

I also like the carpet idea.  I imagine if you get a couple layers of carpet, that would be plenty.  A nice shag carpet would be good Wink
