Redding taper crimp question Empty Redding taper crimp question

Post by KevinB Fri Mar 13, 2015 8:44 am

I'm loading up some Zero 185 gr JHPs at 1.220 with 4.7grs of WST and a WLP.  Seated the bullets first and then tried my new Redding taper crimp die.  I've lubed it lightly as well as some of the rounds with a small bit of redding die wax and am getting little shavings of brass.  They are tiny, gold flecks really, but I'm wondering if this will stop as the die gets more use or am I squeezing the taper a bit hard?

First, how tight are you crimping? .468-.469 is best imo, next, when tumbling your brass add a cap ful of a good liquid car wax, or buy the expensive stuff the reloaders sell but its the same thing. I also like to use after cleaning to lightly spray the cases with hornady spray case lube, they will load like butter and dries in a couple minutes

Crimp as best I can measure is at .471.  Of course this a jacketed bullet so I don't expect to be squeezing into it much, just a snug fit.  mixed range brass

Your not loading a 9mm, they only require a slight crimp with a 45, you need a tighter crimp to build pressure and get a good burn of the powder, .471 will not even function in many match grade barrels its on the edge of being to big.  First the 185 fmj-hps are a .451 bullet, .468 is truly where you want to be, .469 for lead as they are .452

Redding taper crimp question Empty mixed range brass

"mixed range brass"  <>  The difference in trim length makes for a different crimp each time. To much on one, to little on other. Problem is, 45 acp brass never needs trimming. Should not hurt accuracy with a jacketed bullet. Not good for lead.

I just turned the die in a bit at a time and am getting a nice .469 consistently now.  Just  hadn't adjusted it enough, seems to be a nice gradual taper in the die.

Range brass will also have different wall thickness,  adds to the problem of length.

for best accuracy try and use one head stamp for 50 yards.

80% of the mixed brass I bought is Winchester or Federal so that will be easy.

I never was a fan of tighter crimps, especially with jacketed bullets. My Nosler loads have a .470" crimp. I did some machine rest testing and tighter crimps meant looser groups for me at 50 yards. I use Dillon dies. My guns have Kart barrels and bushings. I used once fired W-W brass or Starline new brass when testing and W-W large pistol primers. YMMV
