Irons, scope, DOT, Some advice please. HS103-1

OK, this is the scope on my HS103. Ive been shooting irons with a Victor barrel on it, but frankly My eyes are real bad, and I really need to start thinking of a dot. I tried once or twice with the old school scope, and struggled, but being everyone is going dots now, I didn't work to long with it.  I really don't have a big budget to get a dot, so I might be looking used if I go that way...  So anyways, what are your thoughts on scopes? Should I work with it for a bit and see how it goes, or don't bother?  Also is it possible to find a new, or used dot that's worth anything in the $100 range??  Keep struggling with iron sights??  Ive only shot one match, and don't have a ton of BE experience at this point. I could really use some advice on this. Thanks!

My suggestion is to save up and buy a basic 1" ultradot.  About $160.  This is gold standard of dots.  Many top shooters use this basic model.

I've also had good luck with cheaper millet 1" dot on .22.  You can pick these up for around $75.

Champions choice, Optics Planet, Midway Usa should have these in stock.

I hope this helps.

Ask in the commercial row topic for a good used 1'' ultradot, usually a 100.00 will buy one or try a new burris dot it will do good on a 22 , sells for under 90.00

s1120,
The millet dot is not the same quality as an Ultradot.

There is a lifetime warranty for the original owner of an Ultradot--I have 3 but have never needed it.  I've thrown away 2 millets and 2 adcos

Yep that's the millet I was referring to.  They have held up well for me on .22s

I agree with Rob that the ultradot is a better quality product if you can wait a save up alittle more $$$.

Okay Knightimac, here's my advice; you do not need to ask the question; which sighting system should I use?

You need to drag yourself to you favorite eye care provider and get your eyes tested. Then you can have a

prescription made for the distance from your dominant eye to your pistol's front sight blade while in your

shooting stance. DO NOT get reading glasses as sold by your Wal-Mart; they do not correct for any aberrations

such as astigmatism /cylinder correction in one or more axes.  Also have the correction lens made in one focus

only, do not have the corrected lens made into a bi-focal or gradient prescription.  you can install your regular

prescription lens needed for your non-dominant eye in the other lens holder of your glasses frame. You'll need this

set of shooting glasses frames for any of your optical sighting method as well.  Afterwards, you can decide for

yourself, which sighting method you want to use; open sights or one of the optic sights.  Best of luck; Very Happy

Tony

So I know it's not favored these days but is there any problem training and shooting with a scope?? I hit us the range today with it and I did much better then I did with irons. I can't swing a good dot at this time

Absolutely not! If it's working for you now, and that's the equipment that you have, then use it.  Use the scope to train...it will help you along better than not training at all.

Thanks for the input. Back in the days when my dad was shooting that was the setup to have. Then the dots came out and no one used them any more. All I know is after a few try's I got the hang of it, and was shooting pretty good. A 50' BE target I was doing one shoot drills and was working within the 5 or smaller. Well after working up I was keeping all shots in. Next I'm moving in one. I always had some flyers with iron sights.

s1120,
The scope you have there looks like my old Bushnell Phantom. I shot some really good scores with that old scope long before the days of Red Dots. I wouldn't have any qualms about using it.

Its a old Tompson Center. Made in Japan, and at the newest it would be early 70's.

Thanks,  You can see why I thought it was the Bushnell. I was shooting mine a lot in the late 70's

Oh ya, sure looks the same. I wouldn't be surprised if it might not have been made by the same company and just rebadged
