Where to Mount the Red Dot Empty Where to Mount the Red Dot

Post by chiltech500 Sat Mar 28, 2015 11:36 am

I have a Burris Red Dot reflex type sight which is quite small so I have options on handgun rails for mounting -  closer to the muzzle or closer to the hammer.

Weight distribution to manage recoil is one consideration - my real question is does either location affect ability to "pick up" the red dot for POA?

When in practice with a particular pistol I can pick up the dot quickly after a shot. When switching to a handgun I haven't shot in a while it's sometimes a struggle for me to pick up the dot quickly. I have a used Ultadot 1" on the way, but does anyone have a thought on picking up that dot on the reflex sight?

Thanks

If you are having trouble finding the dot, you probably have a problem with your grip.  Look at Brian Zins' website and look at how he grips the gun.  Straighten your arm and make a fist like a punch.  Now open the fist and put the gun in it, but try to keep your wrist from moving.  Does that alignment reveal the dot?

Oh, and lots of dryfire will help you develop a repeatable grip that puts the dot on target for you.

Thanks gents. Just received my first Ultradot 1" sight and it immediately was easier to use than the open style reflex sights I've been using.

When in practice with a particular pistol dot acquisition is easier. I have a rotating group of 4 pistols using dot sights and switching back and forth with the open reflex sight was a bit of a challenge. I am purchasing a 2nd Ultradot and will use only Ultradots on my bullseye guns.

Had been flirting with a couple of revolvers which are a gem shooting in SA - S&W K38-3 and model 25-2 45acp both with 6" barrels. Problem is I developed a bad tendonitis shooting that heavy 45 and have been shooting mostly 2 hands since late fall. Just coming back to 1 hand carefully the last few weeks.

I restructured my Baer wadcutter removing his aluminum frame mount and subbing a full length rib and now have added the Ultradot. Prior had been using Baers aluminum mount with that little Burris reflex sight which weighs less than an ounce. The current Baer setup with rib and Ultradot seem to weigh as much as the big 6" S&W revolver.

Will have to check out Zinns website. I'm very much a beginner yet trying to get comfortable with my grip and trigger position. I don't believe I did myself a favor by playing with the revolvers and shooting 2 handed.

I noticed in the other post regarding spring weight, that your rib is steel..That will make the gun more difficult to tune, plus it will only aggravate your tendonitis.  If you must have a slide mount, go to Al Marve'ls aluminum rib..
Once that slide stops against the frame in recoil, the shooter's arm absorbs that force.. Recoil costs points...I would rethink your set up..The Aimpoint Micros reduce the weight of the conventional slide mounted optics by more than 50% in some cases, depending on the mount system..
Tendonitis can be very serious, requiring some major surgery...

Jerry I believe you have shared your experiences with me and I may not be able to shoot one-handed again. I don't know.

I tried out the new setup today and the slide movement felt quite different with all that extra weight on the slide. I found recoil to be much less - but I was shooting 2-handed out of caution. I wish I had researched the rib; may end up using a Burris reflex with the aluminum rail you suggested. As mentioned earlier, I only had difficulty picking up the reflex dot switching to a different gun than what I'd been shooting. Hand and brain were in sync when I had practiced with that firearm.

Chilltech,
Al Marvel's scope rail is great.

Brian Zins also reports that for rehabbing tendonitis in the arm, use a gyroscopic exercise ball.  I was hanging out with Brian this weekend and tried his DFX Powerball http://www.dynaflexpro.com/
It's quite a workout and it really had a therapeutic effect on a nagging injury in my shooting wrist.  I recommend it highly.

Also for tennis/golfers elbow use a "band-it" during the day to stabilize your tendons.
