What is a good pistol to use for distinguished pistol competition? Make, model, barrel length etc.

For Distinguished Revolver, a S&W 586 with a 6 inch barrel.  For EIC, either an M9 or a 1911 but both need to be accurized.  All you need to do with the Smith revolver is setup the trigger to your liking.

I would go with a 14-6. But any of the model 14's prior to that would be great also. The 14-6 was the last of a great line. ie pre-keylock

Model 14 is the pick will put 10 bullets in one hole at 25 yards.

If you really want to go for it I have I can sell.14-4 Original Box and Papers not used much original trigger (no trigger job yet).

85% 90% new condition blemish in the bluing on the barrel otherwise 100% like new. Seems like many get that blemish, but no rust or pitting and the bore is shinning like new. I bought from a retired State Trooper that never got around to using it.

Maybe the gun has 300 rounds through it if that much. NO MARK Really on the cylinder. Accurate as all out. I Just bought an expensive Wad gun and  am looking to defray the expense.

3 sets of grips: Original, Harretts Target, and Hogue Rubber.

Original Box and Papers

I have seem them go for as high at $1100 in similar condition and $500 in poor condition. I can send picks.

I don't know your age, size, strength capabilities, so I would caution on the L-Frame.. Great revolver. I think the 4 inch L-Frame is the best fighting revolver ever made,  but it is bigger and heavier than the Model 14.. The 14 is the most heavily favored for BE,  for numerous reasons.. The larger the cylinder, the more difficult to perfect the DA pull.

I agree with Jerry, The L has a rather large frame not good unless you have Big Hands. I have one, didn't like it so gave it to my son Adam, he don't like it either! Now I'm searching for a K or Model 10 or 14 in any condition so I can rebuild it for Distinguished Revolver, If not then I make it for the Harry Reeves match.

Best bang for the buck is finding a cop who used to shoot ppc. He's probably got a 14-2 stashed away for distinguished matches he has no use for in this 3 gun era.

I love my heavy barrel model 10 with a 4" tube.

Very accurate.  Great carry gun under a jacket.

I shoot it fairly well even with the grooved rear strap which acts as a fixed rear sight.

I've resisted the urge to get it drilled and tapped for a dot.

It's my favorite beater/goto gun.

I have small hands, listen to Jerry. I would love to shoot a Model 25 but I cannot.

Model 14 is as near as perfect as can be, 6 inch barrel and perfect pointing ability makes it feel like a blow gun with a 158 grain bullet over 2.7 WST.

My gun never had a trigger job and even so shooting 90's with iron sights is doable without much practice if you are shooting well with a 45.

My bone stock 1911 required nine hundred dollars and took six months to have someone get it to the line.
My bone stock  14-2 required the following work to get it to shoot one inch, five shot groups at twenty-five yards.
.......
Open cylinder.....
Stuff bullets in it.
Close cylinder.Laughing

Ain't that the truth..!!!!SmileSmile
I used the 586 X 6 inch to go distinguished way back then, and the 686 in the 4 inch duty match.. You could often shoot cleans with the 4 inch..There is just something about the fit and ergonomics of that gun/frame combination..

I would recommend using the entire cartridge.

I'd love to have a model 14, but trying to find one in good condition at a reasonable price is not worth the trouble for me I would like to get something that is currently in production. I don't have small hands and I do workout on a regular basic as part of my bullseye training routine. So a large frame gun doesn't bother me.

I have a model 28 (Highway patrolman) now that I was thinking of having s trigger job done on. Should I just stick with that or concider getting something else?

Usually, S&W revolvers have excellent single action triggers right out of the box..Double action is another story, especially with the N frames..

Could you elaborate on the DA of the N?

Because the N frame parts, cylinder, etc is larger, heavier, and requiring more travel/movement, than the K frame parts, it's difficult to produce a DA pull and feel that is equal to the K.

If the model 14's are too elusive for you, the other k-frame's like the mod 19 and 66, although .357 chambered, will still do nicely with .38 spl loads.

DA is a matter of choice. There is no requirement to shoot DA. The pistol has to be capable of it but you can choose to fire SA. I have found that personally I not only prefer single action but would really suck if I went to double action. I always have time to reach up with my shooting thumb and have the next shot ready before I recover from recoil. It would probably be harder if I had smaller hands but I don't. YMMV     28 should work fine

I always shoot SA on my K Model 14.  If you already have that model 28, go with that and shoot it SA.

That's easy. There are 364 of them for sale on GB.  2,000.00-18,950.00. So relatively speaking 3-4k is a decent price. Very Happy
