Been looking at the Magnus Bullet site. And I'm thinkin along the lines of their 185 gr #801 they call it a Button nose wad cutter ......I like it for the simple fact it has more bearing surface than typical 185's ....but what esle is nice is I can order in small amounts (250) so I can get 250 of those and 250 of the normal hg68's ......but does anyone have any experience with that # 801. These guys seem to be very Bullseye active so I'm thinkin it may be a good place to order bullets from..........

They should shoot well, but before you order a gazillon of them

be shure they feed in your gun/magazine combo.

Magnus swaged bullets are repackaged Zero bullets. You can buy either one and will receive exactly the same thing. If you're going to spend the money for #801 I would highly recommend going with #814, swaged 185 gr. SWCHP. I think you'll find swaged bullets shoot better than cast most of the time (not trying to start an argument with any cast bullet shooters here).
I've purchased from Terry at Magnus several times and he has always taken good care of me. Terry used to offer discounts to members of the former Bullseye-L email list, wouldn't hurt to ask him again.

Are you sure about the repackaged Zero's? It seems to me the Magnus bullets have a slight bevel base, Zero's do not.

The pictures on the Magnus site do not look like the Zero's that I use. I will agree the 185gr SWCHP is an excellent bullet in the correct configuration (flat bottom, no bevel), I use these for 25 yards and 50' indoor, very consistent.

I can't say anything about repackaging.
I can say that Terry (he and his wife are Magnus) is very active in the BE community here in the Southeast and is a pleasure to shoot with and deal with. He also regularly supports the local regional matches with prizes of cash and bullets.

I use the 185 swaged as well as the 185 long nose cast from Terry with great results. Give him a call or drop him a line and I'm sure he can help.

I agree that any button nose should be tested first. I have had spotty luck with them.

I've got both bullets at home and they are visually identical. Both Magnus and Zero's have the same bevel on the base. We previously measured each bullet and found them to be identical in every way, the lube even seems to be the same. That's why I assume they are just repackaged.

well it looks like I will then order some bullets from Magnus and it will be the 185gr long nose profile instead of the button nose.........

The Zero bullets I have 185 and 200gr LSWC and LSWCHP are all a flat base as in no bevel what so ever. The photos of the bullets on the Magnus site do not even closely resemble the bullets I have in my basement from Zero.

Steve I think you should not assume that Magnus is repackaging and selling Zero bullets based on some measurements and the fact that they look alike. There are a lot of bullets that look similar, Penn for instance look a lot like a Zero but have a bevel base and the Penns are hard cast not swaged.

Paper-Puncher, you can't make a bad choice by using either Magnus or Zero swaged bullets.
Joe Fobes, here's pictures of the boxes of Zero and Magnus 185 gr. SWCHP's. Also here are pictures of each of the bullets. Like I said these bullets are dimensionally identical, including the beveled base. In testing their hardness we found them to be identical also. Bad assumption? I don't think so.

Not sure which is which but from the photo the bullet on the right looks a lot cleaner on the edges. Or maybe the one on the left got knocked around a bunch?
And I am not trying to argue with you by any means. I just think you should state known fact and not create doubt about good companies and supporters of our sport.

Magnus has a good name and saying they are reselling someone else's bullet without first hand knowledge could have an impact on their reputation and business.

Just looked at the Zero's I have and there is a slight bevel on the 185 SWCHP. So I was wrong in that statement, the 185 and 200gr SWC's have no bevel at all.

I agree with Joe. There aren't enough bullet manufacturers around that care about the consistency that we look for in our sport. We shouldn't be promulgating rumors about the ones we have.

A call to Terry Labbe at Magnus could stop this discussion. I have dealt with him and found him to be an honorable businessman and a pretty fair pistolero. Both of those bullets look a lot like the old Star bullets.

Post by Magnusbullets Fri Nov 11, 2011 8:05 pm

email me an address, will send up some free samples of the 801 to test, it is a copy of the winchester factory 185 match bullet produced for years, about the same as the federal as well. I shot 2658 with them. I have some new test targets to load up to look at on the site from my new springfield custom shop guns. I shoot on the Springfield factory team as well. Nice long bearing surface , shoots with the jhp or factory out of my guns, x ring groups.

I just received a big box of the 811, 812, and 813 swaged bullets from Terry at Magnus Bullets. The bases are flat and not beveled.

Cheers

Cary

The 185 swc hp swaged bullet has a slight bevel to the base, all other swaged are flat base.

Received the button nose 801's today, consistent, flat base and ample bearing surface. Should work nice! I will load some up with 3.8gr of Clays and see what happens next week.
