Trying to work up a light 185 gr recoil load for my 1911.

trying 3.6 gr Bullseye with the Magnus #801 cast button nose, #811 swaged swc and #814 swaged HP swc bullets.

All shot great, the #801 button nose was somewhat snappier than the rest. OAL 1.170 (matched to the Federal GM45B factory round.) good ejection and last shot slide lock.

Both the #811 and #814, OAL 1.250, felt somewhat lighter in felt recoil, stove piped rounds, and failed slide lockback.

Any ideas on why? is it the difference in hardness of cast v. swaged?

Should I just plan on the #801, or, go to a lighter recoil spring till the others work proper.

What recoil spring weight did you use?

You could try pushing the 811 qnd 814 back a tad and see if that gets you a but more pressure and velocity which will give more recoil. But failing that, the 801 works and is accurate.

I believe the bearing surface of the #801's is a bit longer than the other 185 grain SWC's and  more closely matches the 200 grain SWC's. More bearing surface IMHO would mean higher pressure and more recoil. Also you would have to check to see where the base of the bullets end up after seating in the case. If the #801's are deeper then there is less case volume and higher pressure for the same amount of powder.

Just a thought.

hmmm.. interesting thought, I'll have to measure closely and report back!

added:
measured all three.
The #801 does have almost .070 more bearing surface than the #811, and being cast probably is the difference.
I think I'm going to leave well enough alone, and shoot the #801's for awhile.

Too early in my late bullseye career to find more than I need.

thanks

I get really good accuracy with the 801's and 3.6 Bullseye.  Reliable too.

somewhere you mentioned that, and, that's what got me to try it.

I also shoot the #801's but with 3.8 of BE and found it to be an excellent load for my 1911 Clark long slide with 30mm Ultradot slide mount and 16 pound spring.

The hard cast takes more pressure to start moving, versus the softer swaged, just as we have to run copper hotter.
