titegroup for 38 DR? Empty titegroup for 38 DR?

Post by Tim:H11 Fri Apr 01, 2016 8:47 am

Anyone ever try or use Titegroup in .38 Special for Distinguished Revolver? I plan on testing or trying the 158 grain LSWC first. I looked at some load data and decided maybe 3.0 or 3.1 might be a good place to start just because I think that would get me close to velocities that seem to work well for that bullet. I don't know though. Only testing will tell. I need to round up some good brass first for this. I have a ton of mixed head stamped and mixed length stuff just for plinking loads. I'm gonna visit the gun range today and see about getting 50 once fired casings with the head stamp matching.

Purpose for trying Titegroup? I have a lot of it. Wanna see if I can't find a use for it.

I have been using 3.4 grains of titegroup on advice I received at Perry last year. I have been satisfied with the results I get in both SWC and Round nose, although the round nose seems more accurate.

I have Ransom Rest tested Titegroup from 3.6gr down to 2.8gr using the Magnus 158 SWC (#516 I think).  Using a 4" S&W 66.  10-shot groups at 50yds ran between 2.8" and 4", but often having to ignore a single flyer that would have added and inch or two.

This gun only groups just less than 3" using Remington Targetmaster 148WC, which I regard as the gold standard in 38 Sp ammo.  So I guess the above groups weren't too bad, other than the flyers.

The 3.6gr load is more than I would want to deal with on the short line.

For the short line in a Ruger GP100 2.9g of titegroup and the Magnus swaged 158g swc will hold the x-ring easily off sandbags with me pulling the noise switch. It's also almost recoil free. Not much more perceived recoil than a 32. But it's a heavy gun - use it for center fire for a real work out :-)

Long line I use the Zero manufactured stuff. I've had good results with Magtech as well. I have yet to get a good self-build 50 yard load and frankly life is too short to spend the time developing one.

I haven't tried titegroup, but 3.5 WST and 4.0 Unique will shoot 158 LRN to call at 50.
