So, thinking about getting a 1911. I would be interested in a Range Officer but I am from Ma. and can't have one.  What other options would be good.  A new Gold Cup?

Colt has a new competition 1911 that is built to compete with the Springfield RO and is priced about the same. not sure if it legal there but if a gold cup is it might be.

Springfield Armory handguns will not be available in Massachusetts. The factory has said..."WE HAVE NO INTENTION OF GOING THROUGH THE MASSACHUSETTS CERTIFICATION PROCESS because the laws and regulations are not clear"

RO not legal in Calif either. Mil-Spec is though. We have a drop test that requires manufacturers to donate 2 pistols to state of a pistol they would like approved. So very few models available because it cost too much for manufacturers to give up 2 of each model for approval. I'm going to move......not soon enough.

If I had to use a Colt, I would start with a Series 70 gun which start at about the same price. I don't understand why they are using the Series 80 as a basis for a competition gun.

What a shame too. In my youth Calif was a great state to grow up in. Wonderful place to grow up shooting. Look what they've done to it...

I think a Gold Cup is a series 70. So I guess that would be a good choice.   Not really sure of the difference but from what I read the trigger comes out nicer.... Would I be able to do all the upgrades that are done to the RO to the GC?
As a side note Ma's AG just ban all ar types

It looks like there are both series 70 and 80 Gold Cups available. I would use a series 70. The extra parts in the Series 80 trigger group just makes it harder for the gunsmith (or you) to achieve a great competition trigger. I just looked at the website and the Series 70 with lowered ejection port is the same list price as a Gold Cup, so I take back my recommendation. Either will be similar and a good base for a bullseye gun.

A Series 70 (GC or not) should be equivalent to a Range Officer within manufacturing tolerances.

I was a kid in SoCal and feel the same.  We joined the old Santiago Range outside Santa Ana.  Loved that place.

Well I decided on a Gold Cup 70 series.  Went to the gunshop today and guess what.....  I can't buy a new Colt in Ma. It's sad.
Anyways he had a Gold Cup 80 series which I don't want and a 2002 S&W 1911 with the whitedot sights.  Before the E series.
My options are a Remington, S&W and a Ruger or the one just mentioned.  Any reasons not to but the used one?  I want to change things out maybe so????
Thanks

That is a good question that I can't answer right now.  But if I had to guess I would think not.  I will find out Monday.  In the mean time what about the 2002 S&W?  All the 1911 platforms are the same, no?

After rereading my last post I guess the more expensive guns would have tighter tolerances.

"Banned" in 1 state, test units must be supplied in another, ammo shortages for the last several yrs. Where are the exceptions for target guns & 'smiths mentioned by pols speaking of "sporting use" vs "criminals"???  Gun owners have a must keep date in Nov.

I have a Smith and Wesson 1911, pre-whatever. I don't know models but it is a basic blue model and am very happy with it.  I think it is a sleeper really.  The firing pin block safety works off of the grip safety.  To be honest I've paid a lot of money to have BE pistolsmiths build no better triggers and no tighter slides than this gun has out of the box.  And I personally prefer the external extractor.  I fit a Briely spherical bushing and honestly don't think a High Master would lose too many points shooting this gun.  The white dots may actually be helping me focus on the front sight, but the fixed rear would definitely be an issue for you if you're a sight fiddler.  They are dead on for me at both distances.  This model may be ok in your state.

I've been considering selling the following setup. Here's the information I was planning to post with pictures...
Looking for a new 1911 20160716
Looking for a new 1911 20160717

Colt Super converted to 38 wadcutter. Smith and Wesson extended barrel with two hard to find Colt magazines. (Unknown who did the smith work.) Trigger as smooth as glass! I bought a scope mount but haven't had it installed yet (included). BoMar sights on the .38 upper. (Trigger shoe made by a fellow Bullseye l member.)  Beautiful condition. Also a Marvel Unit 1 .22 conversion  with scope mount, two single stack magazines and one double stack. Ultradot mounted on the conversion (Ultradot is not in perfect condition). Probably more extras that I forgot to mention. Would like to sell as a package but may consider selling the Marvel and keeping the Colt.

Selling as a package for 1800.

I'll send more pictures of anything you'd like to see.

I would ask around at matches and see if some one has a wad gun to buy.

Used SA loaded with a NM Frame may be a good place to start with a build. Excluding the sights and the slide safety its essentially the same as the RO.

Greg Derr operates out of MA , he may have some ideas.

I think for 1700 I'd buy a Springfield RO and a bunch of Atlantic Arms ammo.  While Ithaca makes a good pistol, I'm not sure it makes a great pistol.  And for 1700 I would expect a high grade pistol

I can't speak to the current crop of Ithaca's but the two gunsmiths that build them today were personally trained by Bob Marvel. The factory is less than 20 miles from me and I have toured it twice. A friend of mine owns one of the first three built at Ithaca and its an AWESOME gun. Never felt a gun that tight before and the trigger is sooooooo great. I have shot it and it was a soft shooter and very accurate so I would assume its timing is very good as well. Again, this was a very early example and I've not had a chance to compare it to current output. I would like to own one but $1700 is out of my reach.
