Anybody use a comp on their 22's?  Do you notice any difference in recoil?  Accuracy?
Thanks

22 comps definitely hurt the guns barrel accuracy.  This I have seen with the High Standard and 41 comps several years ago.  And it seems to be the accepted norm.

Lately I have felt less recoil jump with an Oregon Precision Arms comp on light guns like Nelson Conversion and an aluminum sleeved Ruger Mkii.  On a heavier gun like the actual OPA, not so much.  Less recoil jump might be an advantage in RF.  But if you can hold it up, a barrel weight is just as effective.  Grip configuration also can influence muzzle jump.

BTW, the OPA gun with it's Fedderson barrel is very accurate.

I've got a steel one on my Marvel.  Not to control the violent recoil of the 22, but it gets it closer to the weight of my 1911's.  I've not compared accuracy with & without.

I've also got one for my Hi Standard's.  The barrels (3 of them) shoot worse with the comp on than with it off, not by much @ 50 yards but it's a repeatable test.

Jack you posted while I was typing.  Good to know your tests came out with the same results.

Buddy's 22 scores were headed the wrong direction with many off call shots, turned out to be comp crud.  He ran a bore snake through his Marvel every other match, turns out comp crud just laughs at bore snakes.

to clean a 22 comp, soak in 50-50 solution of white vinegar and hydrogen peroxide the lead will start to bubble off after a few hours or overnight you can use a dental pic to flake off the rest. key is to not let it build up and it cleans out fairly easy.

My buddy decided on a much easier solution, he got rid of the comp! LOL

I was thinking about buying a Volquartsen LLV for my Ruger 22/45.  Looking at the 6 in. barrel. Thinking that if the comp kept my dot in the black during timed and rapid it would be great.  Maybe that wouldn't happen anyways.  It is going to be a pretty light gun but I  don't want to lose an accuracy.
Guessing I should stick to the plain barrel.........

Had a LLV on 22/45. It was a disaster waiting to happen. We stopped an indoor match while the match director went down range to pick it up off of floor in front of the line. The tiny front sight screw was never designed to support or hold back that much weight. I replaced the sheared off screw with a larger one and it did it again 2 weeks later. That time it just came un-screwed. You can't use any lock tite on the screw because you have to remove it before cleaning the pistol. Yep, that was the third time it broke. Smile

My son has it now. He doesn't shoot much.

For cleaning or rather prevention of debris buildup on compensators (or anything really) you could purchase some pure silicone oil and then bake it on as a sort of glaze.  This method has had excellent results for keeping dirty .22LR silencers clean, and also made cleaning them super easy.  I don't have any thread links right now but you can probably google search silicone silencer or something like that for a more concrete method explanation.

As far as the Volquartsen LLV I purchased one last summer and I liked their setup so much that I purchased their bolt and frame to complete the gun.  As far as weight I decided to add a 3D printed barrel weight mount and used a 5 inch section of brass rod to add a few ounces.  It now weights 43 ounces and shoots like a dream.

I do not have a compensator for mine, and I don't have any intention of getting one but it seems to shoot just fine without one.  It is the only gun I have ever owned where it is more difficult to shoot less than 90 than it is to shoot above 90.   Laughing

ETA: @Oldmaster66: that must have been an old model as there is no screw required for cleaning on the current version...

There's also supposed to be an all steel model coming out soon.

I guess I should clarify. If you don't remove the screw in the compensator and take it off the pistol before cleaning then striking the backside with a rubber hammer will do it for you. I felt pretty dumb about that one. I might have the nomenclature of that model of comp confused however.

Oops, mine was a V-comp not an LLV. I blame it on old age Smile

Okay yeah, the shearing off thing makes sense now as I'm definitely seeing how that could happen with the V-comp.  It's definitely not something you would expect to have happen. LOL

I shoot a volquartsen scorpion with the comp. The comp gives a great gun a little better balance. It also allows me to shoot a wider variety of ammo. Without the comp my gun won't cycle sk pistol. With it I get half inch groups on the ransom rest.

Comps on 22 pistols Empty UPDATED WITH PIC

Post by Saladman 8/17/2016, 10:03 pm

No but I'll go take some and update this post soon.  Laughing

The grips are very much a work in progress, and I'm not sure how to make them as suitable as I would want but they work as of now.  They are made from two sets of two part epoxy putty I bought at the hardware store and applied while holding my hand there for a while until it sets.  I think when I get the final product done, as a like super grippy grips, I will add some more epoxy to the surface and then some silicon carbide grit for ultra handpain grippiness. The stock rubber grips aren't something I want to permanently modify so it's currently sitting like this until I figure out what to do.  I may wind up buying some basic wood grips for it and building off of it with more wood putty.  Shocked

Anyway, the weight holder I made using my 3D printer (Rigdbot kickstarter).  It's not particularly difficult to get something to print and look good, rather it is difficult to get the sizing correct as the printed object tends to be smaller as a final product than it is when selected in the printing software.  I think this part was printed 105% over-size but I'd have to check its G-Code in Cura and I haven't made anything else that required such precise fitment.  The holder didn't use to wrap around the barrel but that model felt floppy and I added the front ring support - incidentally it likes to keep the thread protector from unscrewing!  The printer was only $500 or so altogether and I think I'm going to try upgrading it.
This pistol is truly unbelievably accurate.  On a bad day I won't score below 90 and that's with 5 cups of coffee and zero sleep. lol!

Thanks for the pics... I see you have put some time in adding some modifications to your gun.  5 cups of coffee and open sights hitting 90's, not bad.

It shoots itself, as evidenced by today.

If you find yourself wanting to add weight to a LLV I can definitely send you a weight mount as I have one extra.  You could call it a "blemish" model but it would work just fine.
