I'd grab a FWB 65 and not look back.  This is the gun that held every air pistol record in the books before the compressed gas guns.   I own a FWB 65 and a FWB CO2 gun.  I last shot the 65 yesterday.  The one and only negative is the effort required to cock and load it.

I have to agree with Axhandle. I have a Morini 162EI and a FWB 65. The 65 shoots 10's all day long, if I do my part. It can also be adjusted easily to a heavier (centerfire) trigger pull. A plate, that should come with the pistol can be inserted so one gets simulated recoil. Parts are still available for the FWB 65 and there are smiths out there who still work on and support them. Like Axhandle stated, the only real drawback for match shooting is the effort to cock the pistol each time. If you are going to get serious about International Air Pistol matches, then shell out the big bucks for a Steyr EVO 10, Steyr LP 10 or Morini 162. Be prepared to pay $1,770 and up.

Are you guys shooting them at 25 yards for practice or at 10 meters? My mentor had a FWB 65 he'll sell me back. It used to be mine. I used it as a trainer for the muzzleloaders at 25 and 50 yards. 25 with mild wind is ok. 50 yards you'll need a calm day.

10m with targets reduced for that distance.  You can download the SCATT software (free) and use it to print distance corrected targets.

The V10 looks identical to the Gamo Compact I was shooting 25 years ago. That gun was pretty good, for the price. Lots of plastic, but functional. I remember adjusting a few things on the trigger and it was decent, but I couldn't get rid of all the overtravel. I would still use one today for training, but wouldn't compete with it. The FWB is a better gun I'm sure.

If you ever try a Morini, Steyr, Walther, etc., all these pump guns will feel very crude and archaic after. So don't ever try one.

You had a FWB 65, sold it, and now looking at an IZH Baikal 46M or Air Venturi V10?

"No ragrets? Really, not even a single letter?"

The FWB F65s and later versions only last a few hours before being snapped up over at Target Talk.

Just pulling your leg, I too have repurchased more than one pistol over the years.  ...

I had a FWB 65 MKI original box (brought over - not the Beaman stamped model) the extra front sights, the adjustment tool, additional plate or part to simulate recoil, test target and papers from factory. Mint condition with a tune job done recently.

I used it as a trainer in cold whether for the muzzleloaders, then needed the money so I sold it to my mentor/coach. Now I kinda want another air pistol and I'm wondering if I should get that one back or go for something else.

Tim,

Buy back the FWB65. With the trigger adjustability and your experience with it training for ML competitions (Do you use a Hamiliton pistol by the way), it should be just the ticket.

I came across that last night or so... I think? Nice one.

I don't know what a "Hamilton" pistol is.... Ok I just looked it up. No. My guns are for what you might call "open" or "unlimited". My cap lock is a copy of the S&W 41, my flint lock is based of a 1911 frame idea and my revolver is a slightly modified Remington 1858 pattern. If I were to shoot the traditional agg matches I'd invest in custom built matching side locks or a pair of Le Page pistols.

The big thing I don't like about the FWB 65 and really it's the only thing - are the grips. I wish I had a set of the target adjustable grips instead.

Here's my .32 caliber flint pistol. Built by Chris Hageman. Uses 1911 grips.

I have an izh 46. Not the m. It served me well for a couple years of practice. I have it setup with a millet dot for bullseye practice on reduced targets. It's a good gun. The sights and trigger are both really good. The grip is definitely the downside of the izzy. I just "upgraded"  to a steyr. Honestly, the steyr trigger is only slightly better than the izzy and that's mainly due to its adjustability.  The biggest difference is the convenience of not having to pump each shot. I like them both, but that convenience is pretty nice, which is why the izzy will be up for sale when I get around to it. Good luck with whatever you pick. Air guns are a lot of fun. I have enjoyed it so much it spawned a new Hobbie... 10m ap!

Hamilton built the 10 Ring Precision Pistols designed around 1911 ergonomics.

Oh Ten Ring! That's that place in Texas that does 45 work. Sure I know of em. I've shot some. Never owned one. A friend of mine who's just starting out in the game has a 10 ring percussion. They're a decent pistol. I prefer the ones I have of course or else I wouldn't have them ha! But there are a fair number of them on the line at Friendship. More Yazels though I think. Some Lewis Guns. I used to have a Lewis .32 cal flint before this Hageman. Hageman used to work for Culinder and Slide I believe...

Don't say I didn't warn you. You might know or have heard of Russ Combs. He's a pretty fair BP shooter. He shoots International Air Pistol in Columbus, Indiana during the season. I can't remember which air pistol he shoots, though.

The Tau Bruno generally shoots pretty well, like most quality air pistol in that price range (Which is generally slightly larger than pellet sized group with quality pellets; but a pellet will fall through the hole - higher end APs are generally a one hole group and a pellet would not typically fall through.)

Actually a pretty good option, be sure to check the CO2 piercing cap and make sure its good.  I never messed with the bulk fill CO2 tank to can't comment there.  Generally up to $475 for really good ones when you can find them.  They also make a junior version and junior grips.  I gave mine to my daughters boyfriend and with some training, he learned a lot with it.  From post below, if you have any issues, just contact Scott at Pilkington Arms.  They can generally help you with about any AP.

I looked at that one but know nothing of it. What scared me off was that I'm afraid of not finding a mechanic for it. At least with a FWB I got a guy here who's one of the best for tuning and parts replacement and repair.

The Tau is a good gun but small and light, very similar to the Air Arms Alpha Proj.  I would try doing a search on Target Talk for price.  I haven't seen one on there for sale in a while but I thought used one went around $500.

I think when the IZH's were selling for $250 they were a leap ahead of anything in their class.  Now I see used ones going for $550.  I think if you are patient you can find a much better pistol for similar or slightly more money.

What makes the FWB not competitive?  Of the three he listed the FWB would be my pick.
