Grip safetys on 1911 Empty Grip safetys on 1911

Want to get a Caspian receiver but I don't have a clue as to what radius I want on the grip safety.  Caspian or .250.  What difference does it make?  Hand sits a little higher with one over the other.  How much higher? What else are the pros vs cons????
I think I like the look right now of not having the beavertail.  Maybe blended right into the frame with very little upsweep.

Use the EGW .220" radius. It will require blending but gives best results on Caspian receiver.

Thanks Jon.
Can someone explain the differences between the two and why I might choose one over the other?

How everything matches up with frame tangs after fitting. All others will not cleanly match up. It's just how Caspians are. EGW only one that really fit well.

I've used a few Browns in the past on Caspian frames and they are just ok(250 radius) the STI are better in the 250 radius(IMHO) but,  as Jon said the EGW 220 blends the best I've seen

Are we talking a Caspian frame with the Wilson/Caspian cut, or a .250" cut that fits best with the EGW .220" radius?

I've been using a Wilson 298B with the Wilson/Caspian cut with good results, but I'm curious if the EGW will give me a good or better fit with less blending. Thanks.

Typically non EGW safeties will not blend nicely into top of frame tang; they are too low. Caspian frames vary a little bit from frame to frame. Sometimes minimal blending and sometimes more.

Jon,
Understood, but Caspian offers two beavertail cuts as options, the "BV" which is the Wilson/Caspian contour, and the "BV2", which is a .250" radius cut. Which one are you saying works well with the EGW grip safety?

You need .220 radius. Buy jig from Smith & Alexander and file tang down yourself since you are fitting it. No frame precut by manufacturer is any better than what you can do with the jig. Just follow directions.

I already have a .220" jig that I use on Springfield Armory frames. I'll try the EGW on my next build. Thanks.

So between the .250 and the Caspian cut there is no difference in function.  You can have it one way or the other and it doesn't matter. You just want to go with a .220 radius because it will be easier to blend in the safety?

I have used both the Caspian/Wilson cuts from Caspian that I use with a Wilson 298B grip safety with good results, and their .250" cut with an Ed Brown grip safety - this in my opinion did not give as good a match with the Caspian frame lines. FYI, the Caspian/Wilson frame cut is not a true radius cut, but a compound cut.

I believe what Jon is saying is that neither cut from Caspian will work well with the EGW grip safety, what's necessary is a .220" radius cut on the frame.

IMHO, the .250" grip safeties (Brown, STI, etc) allow for a higher grip.

They do at the cost of looking poorly fit in most cases. Because I'm getting paid to fit one it has to look perfect when I'm finished, so I use EGW almost exclusively.

STI on a Caspian, by Dave Sams of Sams Custom Gunworks

Very low in the hand.  The weird shape had to grow on me.   I very much thought it ugly at first.

I wanted to thank everyone for their input.  Going to try and put a 1911 together.  And was already stuck trying to figure out what grip safety to use.  I think I am clear now.  Buy a .220 grip safety from EGW and blend the frame into the safety with the help of the jig.
This will be a good learning project because I know nothing about the 1911.
