Aimpoint 9000 sight adjustment Empty Aimpoint 9000 sight adjustment

Post by Caster3845 10/17/2016, 8:59 pm

Have any of you shooters that use the AP9000 had any trouble with small sight adjustments going way off in left field and having trouble getting them back to zero without having to make major adjustments to get the zero back. I have noticed this on occasion with both the scopes that I use. I will move 1 or 2 clicks up and have the impact move 2 inches at 50 yards, then move the 1 or 2 back down and get a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of movement. Then come down 10 to 12 before I get back to where I started. I was talking to another HM competitor at a match last Sunday and he mentioned that he adjusted his 1 click up and the impact ended up 3.5 inches high and 3 inches left. He ended up coming down 14 clicks and 12 clicks right just to get it back to where it was. Scott, correct me if I am wrong. I was just wondering if anybody else was having this trouble.

Aimpoint 9000 sight adjustment Empty Re: Aimpoint 9000 sight adjustment

Not with my 9000. I had the problem last weekend with an ultradot on a 22. I could actually feel the resistance stop while I was cranking it left. I had to turn it 51 clicks before I felt resistance again. When I turned it back (frustrated now) I came to the same 51 click slack spot. Curiosity peaked it was dismantle time. Turns out there is a spring (LT Model) that keeps a positive pressure against the movement mechanism (or supposed to) and when that spring hangs up movement stops until slack in system is taken up. I was disgusted when I found that tapping on the scope made it work properly. Until next time of course. Sounds like something similar is going on in the 9000.

Aimpoint 9000 sight adjustment Empty Re: Aimpoint 9000 sight adjustment

I also have a 9000SC so far I haven't had any problems. The AMU has them on all their guns and I my son said they are still shooting with out problems. If anything would happen it would on an AMU gun since the amount they shoot in one month would be more than the average shooter shoots in a year.
I did have the problem with other scopes such as the 1" UltraDot that windage would change when elevation was adjusted. This usually happen when the scope was on the pistol for a while.
I took one apart to see what what was causing the problem. I think it was the UltraDot however I also took an Illusion apart and it's the same inside. A round internal tube is mounted at one end in a flexible plastic like material and the other end held in place with the elevation and windage screws plus a flat spring. (the Illusion had a rubbery material and not a metal spring) The screw had a ball end that when shooting a while dented the aluminum tube inside. When elevation was changed it would cause the winndage screw's ball end to move out of the indentation causing a windage change and the same to elevation if windage was changed. At first it was a small change but as the indent got deeper the change increased. When Adam was home he shot every day so after a season I changed the scope. I do recall taking another apart at a later date and the ball end was changed to a flat on the screws.
When making the Weaver type base for my 1911 I would mount the Aluminum on the slide and insert the barrel and bushing with a means to keep the barrel in lock-up. I would then insert the slide in my milling vise. A metal gauge pin of the size correct size was inserted in the barrel and indicated so as to make the mount inline with the barrel then milled the Vee for the Weaver type rings. When the scope was mounted and sighted in very little if any adjustment was needed to zero at 25 yards. Therefore when the flat end screws were used I got longer life out of the scope. However a friend had a typical Weaver type mount that required nearly the maximum adjustment to zero it at 50 yards, in looking at the inside of his scope the flat ends indented the internal tube so that it formed a step. That also created the same problem. The scope did not need to be disassembled to check for this, simply unscrew the windage and elevation screws and look in the holes. However that was on the older 1" tubes that I played with. I didn't take my 9000 apart and don't plan to unless I begin to have problems.
Is this a problem that was not present when the scope was first mounted? The jump 2 inches with a click or two then 10 or so to get back sound like screw backlash. That should not happen with something spring loaded. The old method of adjustment was to click UP more than required then click down to the intended amount. Not sure why that would apply to this problem but I don't know anything about the internal structure of the 9000

Sometimes on a UD the adjustment will stick ive found if you mark a start point and turn the screw a full turn and then back it usually goes back to normal. not sure if this might work on a AP but it cant hurt to try

Id have to check my clip board but I think i came down 8 and right 16 and it was still a little left.  It has since stayed put but that 1 click sent it way out there.

That's interesting! 1 click caused a shift of 8 and 16+. I'm wondering if something was sticking. Adjustments made but were causing internal pressure, when it broke free the release in pressure caused that much movement.
I had a similar odd experience with a Primary Arms Micro. As I mentioned before I make my scope base to be exactly in line and on center of the bore. But my first sighter was off the paper at 25 yards. so I shot again at 10 yards. Quite a bit off so I adjusted the windage quite a few clicks and shot again however the impact went the opposite of my correction. Thinking I made a mistake and turned the screw the wrong way and double checking the direction arrow I adjusted double the amount and shot again, but again the impact moved in the wrong direction. I then thought the direction arrow was printed wrong (had this before) I adjusted the windage turning the screw in the opposite direction of the arrow. Eventually I got the shot in the 10 ring as I continued to add yardage shooting at increasing distances on my way back to the 25 yard line. Then for some reason adjustments started going in the wrong direction. I was back to using the direction as indicated by the arrow. Even the elevation was giving me problems but it too seemed to change all at the same time. After getting the gun sighted I realized I was back to where I started. Ever since that time the arrow direction is correct. At first I thought I had a defective scope however since that initial sight-in the scope has been working as it should. I've had no problems!
