Scam sellers and crooks

Post by DavidR on Sat Oct 22, 2016 2:58 pm

Just thought I would caution our members to be very vigilant as to people not known to you offering to sell a item or responding to your want to buy post. Some of the other forums have had several members cheated on fake deals. We just had a scam artist try and get someone to send him 1500.00 for a Rock River 1911 here. Turned out to be a total scam. These crooks are lurking the forums looking for trusting people to cheat. They find a picture on the web of a item and post it as theirs to sell. One thing you can do to see if the deal could be legit is to ask the seller to take a picture of the item laying on a piece of paper and have him write the date or your name or some word phrase on it so you know they are in actual possession of the item. This alone doesn't mean everything is legit but its a good start. Please post any fake deals here if someone try's to scam you.

Caveat emptor and if the deal looks too good to be true, it usually is. Scammers often depend on the greed of potential victims.

I am also highly suspicious when it is the seller's first post or has only posted a few times.  Not all of these are scammers, but it is one more thing to watch out for.

RHWillia63 gave me permission to copy this from TargetTalk, unfortunately he was scammed.  When you are looking for that item that rarely comes up for sale it's hard to resist when you think you found one.

RHWillia63 post:

"I GOT SCAMMED; AND IT WAS MY FAULT!

I've been looking for a used Steyr LP50, and placed a WTB Ad in TargetTalk to see what might be available. After about three days I received a reply from "vcat", (I later looked him up and he joined on 9/5, three days after posting). "vcat suggested I contact a Kevin Bullers, at kevinbullers1@gmail.com, as he thought the person might have an LP50 Compact for sale. Contact was made; seller would not take PayPal; so, foolishly, I wired him the price of the gun. Two emails and one (unlisted) telephone call later, still no indication of pistol being shipped. I suspect "vcat" and K. Bullers are one in the same. CAVEAT EMPTOR.

I spent 30 years in the Navy. Nothing worse than a thief on a ship, and a scammer is nothing but a thief.

CAVEAT EMPTOR!

Suck it up, big boy. It could have been avoided with some due diligence!
