Range Officer ejector

I was cleaning my range officer tonight and I noticed that the ejector looked like it was coming out.  Sure enough, I grabbed it with my fingers then wiggled it just a bit and it came out. SA apparently glues these in.  I did a little research and apparently SA used red loctite to glue the ejector in place.  I plan on heading to the hardware store tomorrow and buying a fresh bottle of loctite, cleaning the surfaces then glue it with the loctite. 

Does anyone have tips or tricks for this that I should know about?

Never heard of this. Use a pin.

New SA have no cross pin in the frame. They are loctited. Just clean it the best you can and re-loctite it. Loose ejector normally doesn't affect ejection much. Slide keeps ejector captive.

Clean everything with acetone, both the ejector and the holes in the receiver.  Use a needle fine and cut a couple of small grooves in the front leg of the ejector pin so the Loctite has something to hold on to.  And of course make sure it's completely flush with the receiver when you put it back.

Thanks for the great tips/comments.  If all goes well I will have my pistol ready for practice on Tuesday and a match on Wednesday.

Since Loctite make many different formulas of "red", you might want to call and ask which they are using. Perhaps 609 or 271, 272?

Didn't know about this shortcut, and frankly don't care for it.  But drilling a deep crosspin hole is beyond the equipment of most hobbyists I suppose.  If you are going to rely on Loctite, I would use something like #620 or #275 to really grip it.  I use #620 to hold barrel sleeves in place.  Jon is of course correct that the ejector is captive and cannot go anywhere.

I've seen Caspian (seconds) frames with cross drilled ejector hole that came out in the magwell. Very scary drilling small diameter holes through almost .700" of steel. KC is right about adding some roughness to the ejector stud. One nice thing about loctited ejector is when you heat it to remove it they almost pop out grom the bubbling ooze

I have a drill press and have been successful in drilling and tapping for my Marvel scope rail but the cross hole for the ejector pin is way too scary for me.  I will be happy with the loctite and just keep an eye on it when I clean the pistol.

Agree with your decision.  If I were going to put a pin in from scratch, I would probably use a center cutting end mill to plunge cut past the ejector hole and then drill carefully from there.  But if Jon and KC are fine with the Loctited ejector, you can be sure it will be ok.  Few folks have the shop gear to do what I described.

I was wondering KC or Jon if you where going to drill the receiver to pin the ejector and you had the proper equipment  is there something that would you use to guide you to the proper drilling location or do you just eye ball it ? and drill through the receiver first and then put the ejector in and drill it ?

I would use blueprint to locate hole position.

John answered part of your question as to locating.  To answer the other part, it is wise  (this is one way, Dr. Don mentioned another ) to put in a sacrificial piece of steel rod that is the same diameter as the front post for the ejector.  This will support the drill bit through this area, and minimize the likelihood of it breaking, and help keep it running straight. 

Another variation is drill to just past the cross hole with the sacrificial rod in place, follow for a short distance with the end mill to make certain that you have a straight hole to follow, then finish by drilling.

+1 on what Jon said.  But I've taken out and put back in several of the SA ejectors without a retaining pin.  My Loctite of choice is 271 so that I CAN get it back out in the future.

I removed a glued ejector from a range officer last night. Both of the pins were glued in and it took an Act of God to remove it. So I wouldn't fret about no pin holding in the ejector.

Just checked mine, slid right out of the frame without even trying. Cleaned and applied some LocTite 668 for peace of mind.
