I've got 2 Mark IIIs.  One will eat almost any ammo, the other is really picky.  I polished the feed ramp and it got a little better, but it is still touchy.  Problems with different ammos range from feed issues to extraction issues to stovepipes.  Any ideas?

If you have 2 then you can figure out what the problem is by substituting parts. Swap barrels, swap recoil springs etc. When the problem switches to the other pistol then you have figured out where the problem is. Only swap one thing at a time.

Best way to fix it is to trade the bad one in on the new MK4, you`ll never look back. Better yet, trade BOTH MKIII in. The MKIII`s & 22/45`s are dead now since the new MK4 hit the market. I bought the MK4 and got rid of every one of my other MK pistols.

Trade one for a MK IV and the other for a MK II.

I used to have a MK III. Alibi city. Now I have a 5" Bull Barrel and a Slab Side Target. Both MK II's. Reliable as the day is long. If you keep your eyes open on Gun Broker you can find them for around $400 in stainless.

My 22/45 mk III is the kind that will digest anything. I cannot remember the last time I had a malfunction. It could be 20k rounds ago. I have a Volquartsen extractor in mine. Maybe that helps?

My Mark III is not picky I wish I could say the same about mt 22/45.  Some brands of ammo it jams the face of the bullet into the top of the chamber putting a big deep smile in the lead.  Suspect a mag problem but both mags do it.  Don

I will try to post the video in here, but the forum might not let me because i`m a new member.

Nope didnt post... sorry, you`ll have to go search for it on youtube.

Magload,
i believe the bore axis might be slightly higher on your MK3. That might be why the mags work in your MK3 and not your 22/45.
But i have no actual data to go by or proof of it. Just looking at the differences, MK3 looks to be higher, making it feed better.

So if anyone else knows the real facts, please give a shout.

Well, Mk III and 22/45 mags are not exchangeable. Totally different critters

More difference I think then just the base but then again I never tried to convert one to the other.

Well Len, i dunno anymore, things change so fast anymore, i cant keep up...lol.
But i do remember we switched base`s on a pair in the past. Either way, both can be fixed if there is an issue with either one.

Both guns came with two mags the base plate appears to be the only difference and just holding them side by side they appear that they could be switched.  The corners the video says to round off are very sharp so I will give that a try first.  I only ever use one mag and then only load 5 rounds so I can work on one of them with out the gun going down.  Some brands feed every time and some jam all the time.  I have probably a 8 thousand rounds of TAC 22 for practice and the 22/45 hates them.  Don

I R confused. Nothing new about that. The difference between a Mk III and a Mk III 22/45 besides the safety is the grip angle. The Mk III retains the same grip angle as the Mk II but the 22/45 was changed to match the grip angle of the 1911. If they do not change the angle of the magazine lips then the bullet will be pointed too high and put dimples in the bullet your trying to feed. Oh wait, that's what's happening. I thought (but don't have a magazine here) that the angle was different. And in a FWIW my 22/45 does not like Tac 22 either but loves CCI. The Tac must be releasing sooner for some reason or the timing is off because they are such powder puffs. None of my pistols like Tac 22 on cold days.

Len (Ok, my model 17 does fine with Tac 22 on cold days Smile )

My mkii mags set a little high. The lips were close to the ejector. I lowered the mags to about 1/16" below ejector and now it runs like a champ. Gotta grind a little. Should be easier with a mkiii.

The grip angle is indeed different but Ruger did that by not having the magazine insert parallel to the grip on the 22/45. This is a constant problem for our youth program where we get kids who only shoot once a month, they always try to insert them along the line of the grip (as one would normally expect) and are frustrated that they can't do something as simple as load the handgun. Wish I had one on hand to take a picture (the only reason I might want one). So.... while the grip angle is very different between the two guns the actual magazine angle vs the bore line, is not.

No I am not putting a Mark III mag in my 22/45 as it can't be done.  Just tried it.  The base plates are so different the mag will not even come close to seating.  I also have not changed the base plates.  What I think is happening is that some brands of ammo the front of the round is popping up to soon when it gets stripped from the mag letting it go forward nose high.  Don

They are mouse loads my Labradar shows HV @981 fps where as the CCI Standard are at 1000.  I have ran chrono and grouping test on 13 22LRs so far.  Have not done any of the expensive match grade stuff a box of Tenex is not in my retirement budget. lol  Don
