38 Super Build Empty 38 Super Build

Post by Gold Cup 12/20/2016, 12:22 pm

New member here, really like the information very helpful . I have an STI frame kit, single stack and cut for the nowlin ramp.I was considering having a 9mm built but after reading about the 38 super in this forum  I had a change of heart. I would like to be able to shoot the heavier cast bullets at 700 fps so I am looking at the Clark 1& 10 twist . This pistol will be used mainly for PPC . Is it possible that a 1&10 twist will also shoot a lighter cast bullet such as the Dardas 126 grain ?  Also is it possible to run the full 148 hb wadcutter  in the 38 super case . I have a Model 52 that I love and is very accurate at 50 yards but the magazines have to be modified to hold 6 rounds for PPC . From what I have  read here seems like the 38 super has a lot more potential for accuracy and low recoil than the 9mm. I hand load all my ammo .Thanks

I doubt that the 148 hbwc would feed very well. Might be accurate but not "Practical" Ok, I had to get that in there. The good news is that Magnus makes a 147gr LFP bullet that is very accurate and feeds great in the super. Welcome to the forum.

Maybe Jon has some experience with the super in 10 twist...My Kart is a 16 if memory serves.

The dardus is all we shoot in it and it does very well....

My 1-32 twist 9MM needs to push a 115gr HAP about 1,100 fps (24,750rpm) to stabilize it.  The 9MM with the 115gr HAP is a <1 1/2" gun @ 50 yards but after having carpal tunnel surgery the sharper recoil of the 9MM has become an issue for me.

KC is going to fit a 1-10 38 Super for it.  Light lead loads is the goal and @ 750fps the 1-10 twist is turning a bullet @ 54,000rpm, it will be interesting to see which bullet performs best and how light can I go, the 126gr Dardus SWC or the 147gr LFP, and where I have to end up with FPS.

What stopped you from just getting the STI Targetmaster in 9x19?  I've heard of folks getting 2" groups (some even less) at 50 yards with them (stock) with decent handloads. IIRC, they were made for PPC.

Thanks for the responses . I use  the Magnus 148 hbwc in my open revolver and am very happy with them . The STI Targetmaster  is a very good pistol but chambered in 9mm and I don't think it comes with the full bomar rib which most of the open semi autos have out there. Since I have my 1050 set up for 9mm and I have the dies for the 38 super also,I was thinking the super may have more potential for accuracy and recoil like the 38 special. I checked starline and the cost of brass for 9mm and 38 super is almost identical . I'll probably go with the 1&10 twist in the super and try the heavier cast bullets first. Thanks

Have you talked to KC Crawford yet?  When I was at Perry asking about a 9mm 1911 he had some great insight into using 38 Super instead.  It might be worth a phone call to have him build or re-build your pistol to match standards.

He's a super guy and won't steer you wrong.
