crimping 38 cal lead bullets

Post by rebs on Fri Dec 30, 2016 3:46 pm

Do all you guys use a crimp or do some of you not use a crimp on these bullets ? I mean is it necessary for accuracy to crimp ? What would happen if you don't crimp but just straighten the case mouth back to fit the bullets in the chambers ? As long as there is no set back of the bullet why crimp ?

You Definately have to crimp for accuracy. I made a mistake recently when setting up my reloader again for 38 special: not enough crimp. I couldn't hold black at 50 yds and barely held black at 25 yds with a known 1.5" grouping pistol. CRIMP Smile

That looks like the minimum level of crimp.  You could t Roy a little more like 1/16 turn on your die.   Try both and see which gives better groups.
