DA revolver training Empty DA revolver training

Post by Al Thu Dec 29, 2016 6:53 pm

Had range nite last night & attendance was light so I decided to do some revolver work.  it's an old pinned frame 6" m19 S&W that has had a target trigger & hammer added along with a Bomar Rib and Pachmayer Gripper grips.  Just makes me smile whenever I grip it, not having to wonder why Bill Jordan liked them so well.

I've been trying to find a load that works at least a little bit at 50'.  Had a bunch of 148 WC out of an H&G 50 mold that I left unsized but tumble lubed until I established the bore diameter and the cylinder throat diameters (still haven't).  Working with WST 2.7 & 2.9gr with a little bit of bullet depth experimentation.  None are shooting as well as I think the 19 is capable of, so I know there's a bunch of "loose nut behind the trigger" going on.

So here I am with 150 rds of experiments left that need to be contributed to the range scrap reclamation project, so I figured I'd work on some timed/rapid fire double action only.  I shot all on the same target. First 60-70 rds were not a pretty picture, some 4's, 5's & misses.  Then I played around with my grip placement and trigger finger placement.  I'd like to say the rest were 9's & 10's but no.  Most of the rest were at least in the black, so 7's & better.  And, most of those were better.  I've tried shooting single action and re-cocking every shot, but it is tough to get them all off in rapid fire, not to mention challenging to reestablish the grip after moving the thumb around that much.  I know that's been done, but I don't shoot revolver enough, and it's not important enough to me, to master that technique.

After I burn up all the unsized ones and actually measure everything, my intent is to stick to the 158 swc and develop loads for that.  Then I need to remove the bomar and the target trigger & hammer so I can use it for distinguished revolver pursuits.

The pursuit continues!!!

Al, all my S&W 14's and 66's prefer the 158 gr RN to the SWC bullet.

a search for" DR loads" and a fantastic list for both revolver and auto will pop up!

I would give some thought to round nose vs the SWC. I and many others have found them to be more accurate at 50yds which will be needed for DR.

When I shot the revolver league in valley, I used a grip that allowed me to single cock with out my grip changing. I did fire a 98-5x rapid fire with an 8  Smile. This was a S&W 686+.

Just do some more practice with the 19 and I think you will be in good shape. Also speak with Trav & Rick on what load he is using he got some exceptional accuracy with the 158 swc. They are shooting the match in bismarck on the 7th and 8th not sure which day. Got 4 from valley coming over for on the 8th

Sure, now that I've got three different 158 gr swc molds to play with Smile

When I've got an hour to spend on the phone I'll give Rick a call.  I never seem to be able to do it in less.

Looking forward to seeing you guys at the match.  Not sure yet which day I'll be shooting or calling the match.  Kevin & I will alternate.

You shouldn't need to remove the target trigger and hammer. I think they were a factory option on that model.

For timed and rapid, I start with the hammer cocked, then fire the remaining 4 shots double action. Dry fire practice with the bullseye timer app helps.

Try resting your thumb beside the hammer. Almost touch it. The as it recoils cock it. Your grip won't change at all that way.
