WTB Checkered Arched Mainspring Housing

Post by Tim:H11 on Fri Jan 20, 2017 3:55 pm

I'm looking for an arched mainspring housing for a 1911 that's checkered. Not grooved or serrated but checkered like a flat one might be similar LPI.

There are a lot of them that say "checkered" but don't look checkered. The Hogues look right.

I have one from S&A (Smith & Alexander) that I like.  It's a quality piece that they actually make in-house (when I called, the one I wanted was out of stock, so the very nice lady who answered the phone looked up the production schedule and told me that they were making more the following Monday).

I have the one that includes the mag well (what S&A calls a "mag guide") on the arched housing.  http://www.smithandalexander.com/guides.html  I selected that one over other 1911 mainspring housings with magwells because the checkering goes all the way down, it doesn't stop where the bottom of a normal mainspring housing would be.  Since one of my reasons for choosing the magwell was to extend the 1911 grip down another 1/4", that mattered to me.  It prevents the corner of the grip from digging into my hand.  The S&A website has terrible photos on it, but this page has a nice photo of the piece I'm talking about, right in the first post... http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=152565  It fit onto my Springfield Range Officer with a tiny bit of sanding on the sides of the housing, and the magwell part fits and works great.

But if you don't want the magwell, S&A also sells just the mainspring housings.  http://www.smithandalexander.com/spr-housing.html

But, there are lots of choices for checkered mainspring housing at Brownells... http://www.brownells.com/handgun-parts/index.htm?k=1911+mainspring+housing&psize=96
