SA 9mm Red Dot and Mount Question

I am in the Q to have a rail attached to one of my 1911 slides.  However, I will be waiting for 3 or 4 months and would like to get a red dot mounted to my SA 9mm yesterday



I am looking at the Vortex Venom and the Burris Fastfire.

What would you guys recommend for a good rear sight mounted red dot? 

Regarding mounts, the EGW LPA mount looks like it would work fine.  Any comments on the EGW mount?

Instant gratification. No waiting in long queues. I have a big one in the shop but have this identical press in gun room. Brownels sells tap and drill bit sets. Practice on a less expensive piece of metal first.

I would love to have the ability to mount my own rail and will eventually get there.  However, at this time, I must wait in the Q

I use the EGW mount on a SA RO in 9mm with a Burris Fastfire III. I like it. I did drill a very shallow detent in the dovetail for the set screw used with the mount. This insures no movement. Also made a phone call to EGW prior to purchase. Very knowledgeable and helpful folks there.

I did the same, unless EGW now provides an LPA mount for the FF3 hole pattern, you will need to order the EGW mount for the Docter and order a Jpoint-to-Docter adapter from J-point along with 1 angled shim to get enough elevation adjustment.  This is what I learned on this forum and it works very nicely with no need for drilling.  The FF3 may not be good enough for serious BE but works very well for my non-competetive BE application.  Total cost around $60 including shipping.

That 9 is perfectly legal now for EIC matches. It seems a shame to not be able to use it for that also. I made myself a mount for my 45 RO and a Kimber that let me switch back and forth in a couple of minutes. I used a Weaver mount that I modified but you could do it just as easy with a Clark rail. By shortening the mount I was able to leave the front and rear sights alone. Admittedly the scope stays on 99% of the time but can come off easy to shoot with steel sights. Just something to think about while your waiting in your queue.

I was wondering if is was okay to fit a 6" barrel on a 5" slide and it looks like it is    Nice set of toys.

I made the decision to go with a Vortex Razor along with the EGW mount.  For now, this should work out just fine.

Regarding the rail, I have an R1 that I do not care to much about which I could use as a rail install testbed. 

From your photo, it looks like you have one screw behind the chamber and two in front holding the slide down correct?

Some time ago, replaced rear sight on two ROs with insert for the not-too-standard Springfield cut and mounted Burris FF3 on both.  Sight ends up uncomfortably high AND FF3 proved difficult to use.  One was replaced with C-more, but today would be replaced with Venom.

Since then, much shorter inserts have become available.  Have Venom sights on the slides of several pistols with zero problems.  Easy to use.  Easy to turn off, which is not the case with FF3.  Can find a slight discount from the $230 asking price.  

If I find the time and energy, I will remove the old tall insert and insert a new, shorter insert.    More manufacturers are now selling pistols with slides cut for red-dot sights.  A Sig P320 RX, Q5, Glock MOS, or even a M&P Pro CORE 9L (after replacing guts with Apex parts) could do a good job for you with less effort and cost.   Owner of the 9mm RO now with C-more expects to sell same and use something that is more modern.     Mac

Cheap and no drilling your gun, Here is all you need, just add a dot, these work, i have one i add to my les baer CMP gun if i need a back up, on and off in a few minutes. I added some grip tape to it and it works great.

I placed the order for the Vortex Razor along with the EGW mount today.  Hopefully, everything will fit without any issues.

David R recommended a grip mount APM7 that has been in existence for many, many years.  From what I have seen, the result is a red-dot sight that is quite a long distance above the slide and, for some, interference with ejected cases.  Does a newer version exist that deals with these issues?   Mac
