S&W K-Frame grip Empty S&W K-Frame grip

Post by LSM 124 Tue Jan 24, 2017 5:01 pm

I don't consider myself a bullseye shooter, wish I was, but I just don't get to shoot often enough to improve my skills.  I do like to shoot my model 19 every so often, and shoot mostly SA, and have an issue with the grip.  I just don't get a good grip on it that is consistent, especially when trying to cock it with my shooting hand. (It has target grips.)

Are there any revolver shooters among you?  If so, what grip are you using on your Model 14's that give you a repeatable hold?  I have Nil grips on my 41 and 52 and they fit me quite well.  Wondering if I should spring for one for my Model 19? (which will have to do until I find a nice 14 with TT and TH!)  I have medium to large hands.

Thanks for your input!

I AM A PPC SHOOTER FROM WAY BACK. I'VE TRIED ALL KINDS OF GRIPS OVER THE YEARS.NILL'S HOGUE'S UNCLE MIKES, PACHMYR'S . BILL DAVIS DESIGNED A GRIP FOR PPC GUNS 30+YEARS AGO. USED THEM ON AND OFF. WHEN I WENT TO GO FOR DISTINGUISHED REVOLVER IN BULLSEYE (#34) I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I FOUND AN OLD PAIR OR THE DAVIS GRIPS AND IT WAS LIKE MAGIC. I THAN REPLACED THE GRIPS ON MY PPC DISTINGUISHED , SERVICE AND OFF DUTY REVOLVER WITH THE DAVIS GRIPS. I'VE NEVER LOOKED BACK. THEY ALLOW EASY ACCESS TO THE HAMMER FOR SINGLE ACTION AND A GREAT GRIP FOR DOUBLE ACTION. THEY FIT K &L FRAME S&W SQUARE BUTT, THEY ALSO FIT THE  ROUND BUTT , BUT THE BACK IS OPEN . I FOUND THAT THE OPEN BACK HAD NO AFFECT ON MY SHOOTING. AT $17.95 A SET THEIR A STEAL. JP

I am right there with you with my Mod 17. When I break the thumb to cock the hammer it feels like the gun settles down into my hand and I have to shift it back up to be comfortable. I also have large hands.

I prefer the Nills on my 14 but with large enough hands the factory targets work pretty good. I have tried a lot of custom grips (Herretts, Houge, Pachmyer) but like I said the Nills work best for me.

+1 on the Bill Davis long grips. -  They are the-grip for my "flail-grip" technique. - Don't ask.

This is why I shoot double action for sustained fire.  If you haven't tried it, you should.

I plan on moving to a semi soon as I can. Just shooting a revolver right now because that is what I have. I'm sure a different grip would benefit me in timed fire. There's plenty of time in slow fire, and not enough (for me) in rapid fire to worry with SA.

I did mention that if your hand is big enough then factory target grips work good. This works for me for K and N frames. By placing my pinky under the grip the pistol can not drop while thumbing back the hammer. There are a lot of smaller grips out there if you decide to try this method.

Len you sure you're not the Jolly Green Giant? Dang that's a BIG hand ;l)
I think most grips put the web of the hand too close to the hammer for the thumb to articulate cocking the hammer with precision. Most shooters end up completely losing their grip and fiddle fart around trying to precisely cock the hammer. So you not only have to make up time because your thumb cocking but you have a mechanical breakdown in your gripping fundamental. I use to shoot revolver many years ago but even haven't started shooting one again until recently. I'm getting ready to buy grips that move my hand further away from the hammer. My fingers are long enough to still reach the trigger. I used to have Pachmayr grips that were like that. I'm currently shooting equally well double or single action scores in the mid to high 90's on the short line. I'm debating putting a narrow smooth trigger into the gun because the wide trigger isn't conducive to double action trigger pulling in my opinion. I have a feeling I'll be shooting double action though regardless.

Interesting thought of the finger under the grip. Ill have to give that a test.

I shoot SA with my model 19 with the smith target grips and it works pretty well. A vary slight movement when I cock, but it settles right back into place as I regrip.

I like Herrett Shooting Stars. I'm picking up a few DR points with them. I shoot sustained fire double action though.

Chris, To answer your rhetorical question "Lol how do you hold onto a ruger single action". The answer is Hogue and Bisley. Bisleys have special grips and the Hogues are huge. Laughing

+1 but for DR I will get a rubber inner tube and wrap the grips for a little extra transaction.

Are the Bill Davis grips Distinguished Revolver legal? I read in the rules that flared grips are not allowed. On the Bill Davis website it's says that the grips are flared where a shooter would need them to be. So now I'm not sure.

Davis grips - DR Legal or not?

DAVIS GRIPS ARE LEGAL. THEY ARE MIRROR IMAGE ON EACH SIDE. ALLOWED FOR DISTINGUISHED REVOLVER BY NRA FOR BOTH BULLSEYE AND PPC. USED THEM FOR YEARS AT BOTH THE PPC NATIONALS AND CAMP PERRY. JP

Rich.tullo,  You can not wrap anything around the grips for DR. 3.1.4 no weighted grips. 3.1.4 f no tape on grips. Just an FYI.

Thanks to all who commented.

Yes, given the low cost of the Davis grips, I will give them a try (what's one more set anyway?)

My Len, you do have big hands...I tried your method with my pinky under the grip and that doesn't work for me, my hands are not as big as yours.  Mine measure about 90 cm across the palm, which typically puts me somewhere between medium and large.

I do have long fingers, so what Jon wrote hit home - I need to put some space between the rear of the frame (high up near the hammer) and my hand so that I can thumb the hammer more efficiently.  Does anyone have any suggestions for a grip like this?  I cannot tell from the photos that I have seen on line if the Nills or any of the others add some wood in this area.

I hope I am not doing anything bad by posting the following link from GB, but I do so to only show the grip.  I have no interest in the gun for sale (in fact it appears sold)!  http://www.gunbroker.com/item/615294094

These grips show what I think I need.  Does anyone have any idea who makes these???

Thanks!

Ha Ha sorry, I meant 90mm.  I can't remember which grip manufacturer it was, but 90mm was the dividing line between medium and large.
