Springfield Range Officer Accuracy Questions Empty Springfield Range Officer Accuracy Questions

Post by Mike Kirkpatrick 2/20/2017, 1:24 am

Gents,

This is my first post here and I wanted to start by thanking everyone who reads my post. This place is a fantastic resource and I've learned so much from reading the stickies/other posts. I did have a quick question and wanted to get some thoughts on if you can.

I'm new to bullseye, as my competitive background is in other shooting sports (USPSA and IDPA). I recently picked up a Springfield RO in 9mm and 1 in .45 to start competing in CMP matches with. I also have a Nowlin barrel/bushing (gunsmith fit) for each gun ready to be fit by my gunsmith as well. My question is, what type of accuracy should I come to expect out of such a setup with good loads at 50 yards? I'm new to the fitted barrel thing, and was curious what type of accuracy the gun should/could be capable of at that distance after fitting the barrels. My smith says that the slide to frame fit on both guns are very good (especially the 9mm) as well. Just figured I'd ask what to expect. I have a Lee rest and plan to go tomorrow to get a before/after.

Thanks a lot and I hope everyone has a great week!

Somewhat dependent on ammo.  Since this is for Bullseye, I'd opt for some Atlanta Arms ammo loaded with 185 HP for national match (800 fox or lower).  I'd expect out of your setup 3-1/2 inch groups.  You'll find 9mm even more picky on ammo.  But if you can fin something it likes 2-3/4 groups should be common.

Would ditch the nowlin for a kart or KKM.

Nowlin barrels have drop in upper barrel lugs. Not recommended for BE pistol.

Oh wow, did not realize that! Really glad I posted here first. Thanks for the info. Will re-order two Kart barrels tonight. Will Kart get the gun close to 3" at 50 yards?

Some kart barrels are better than others. I don't build guns but if any of my guns shot 3" with match ammo I'm gonna rebarrel or rebuild the gun.

Kart is what other barrels are compared to. Kart will easily hold 1.5" at 50. Get a BE smith to build your guns....it does matter.

My wife's bone stock RO shoots 1 1/2 at 50 from a Ransom Rest with 185 Nosler HP and 4.6 BE.  Mine is 2 1/2.  Both were terrible with Speer 185 SWC.

I with Mike on this.  I sure would shoot that gun at least from a rest if you can't use a Ransom Rest before having work done.  Mine will do 2.25 With a Ransom.  Finding the ammo it like best has a lot to do with group size.  Don

You might also consider a Barstow barrel. The one in my RO will hold 1.5" at 50 yds in a Ransom Rest.
