1911 feeding problem Empty 1911 feeding problem

Post by estuck 3/26/2017, 9:06 am

I am looking for thoughts on a feeding problem I am having with my .45 wadgun. Pistol was built by one of the top gunsmiths. I have been shooting 185gr lead semi wadcutters over the winter for our indoor league with no feeding issues.  I recently loaded some 185 gr. Zero JHP with 4.2 gr N310. COL of 1.210. Crimped at .470. Now I am having feeding issues where the round does not make it to the chamber but hanging up at the barrel face/frame junction, leaving a mark on the bullet near the tip. Magazines are Mecgar with flat follower. Supplied with the gun. Recoil spring is #15 as pistol is a frame mount. Ejection is fine. I'm thinking a magazine issue, but with no problem with Semi-wadcutters, I could use some input.  Feedramp/barrel is highly polished. Gun clean and oiled.

Sounds like a magazine issue. The round is being released too early. I'd try a different type magazine, unless you have the knowledge, tools and experience to adjust the lips on the ones you have.

I too have had that problem with JHP in a rebarreled pistol.

The things that worked for me were a combo of making the round longer (1.240"), swapping magazines to Tripp Research, cleaning and polishing the frame ramp and taking some material out of the barrel ramp. I'm not sure whether I took the material out in the way my pistolsmith suggested.  I'll be back at the range soon to confirm it is fixed when using 4 other mags.

I ordered an EGW high magazine catch, but have not needed to try it.  I have heard that fixed it for others.

Change all the followers to rounded and install 6 lb Wolff magazine
springs.

Mag springs made no difference for me as the round naturally nose dives as it leaves the magazine's feed lips.

At the barrel frame junction does the barrel protrude s little so that the bullet catches on it? I'm thinking that is what creating the mark on the bullet.

My feeding problem looks exactly like Aprillians photo.  I have some older Metalform Mags with rounded follower I will try.  The frame ramp is highly polished as is the barrel ramp. Transition area looks very good to me. What has me puzzled is that the 185 Semi wadcutters feed ok. I measured the rounds that hung up. 1.210 exactly. Yesterday I got four out of fifty.  I had my shooting buddies watch me to confirm it wasn't shooter induced. (3 x,s and a ten timed before malfunction}

had this very issue with my EIC 45. the EGW mag catch resolved it...

you can also bend the feed lips out on your mags to help point the round higher.

I use an AR magazine tool but it works fine on 1911 mags and doesn't scare them

I tested 180 rounds out of 5 different mags today and had ZERO jams.   I ran JHP, BNSWC and LSWC and all real fine.   I even got one really good target out of them all.

Good luck with your jams.
