The listing for the scope I just bought said it came with a mount for a Mk ll. This is what I received. It looks really well made but don't know if it would work well. It is an Aimpoint so I am probably worried about nothing. Looks like it was made to go on a pistol that was not drilled and tapped.

If  I remember correctly those mounts had a threaded insert that went into the dovetail for the rear sight.  The one large cap screw then threads into the insert.  Used to have on my MKII  a very long time ago but it did not have the Aimpoint logo on it.

It worked fine but winds up being a bit on the tall side.

Since it did not come with the dovetail I suspect I have a nice Aimpoint paper weight. Thanks for your response. Anyone need a paper weight?

Looks like MGW makes one that is very similar.

I used the MGW one for a while long, long ago on my Mark II.  I had a bit of a job getting the little dovetail piece into the rear sight slot, but other than that it worked great.  Is there nothing holding the hex bolt into the mount?  They normally ship with the dovetail piece mounted inside the cutout on the bottom.  Even an amateur metal worker should be able to make the dovetail piece, if they can drill and tap for the bolt.  Someone with a mill could easily make the four cuts, or a better metal worker could do it with hand tools.

Thanks Ed, I don't know if I consider myself a "better" metal worker but I think I can drill and tap a piece of metal. Bought it used and nothing that resembles a dovetail came with it. Good news is the part is totally enclosed so I can butcher away. Smile

Sounds good!  Let us know how it turns out.  (Wish I had that much room - but, then I'd probably fill it with too much junk...)

Couldn't you get an aftermarket or oem fixed sight to cut down & tap?

When/if I decide I want it on a Ruger I will do the whole project with a belt sander. Start with a store bought nut that fits the screw and remove everything that does not look like a dovetail. The fit does not have to be perfect since the screw pulls everything tight and solid. Being a tad OCD I will still try to make it perfect but as long as it slides in and is bigger on the bottom than the top it should work fine. I put it in my future projects drawer.
  Thanks for all the responses.

Just a small note that if the angles aren't quite matched, I'd favor having the bottom tighter than the top.  Since the top of the receiver dovetail is rather small, if your insert is tight at the top and loose at the bottom, you might widen the top when you stress the mount under bolt tightness.  It would be better to risk the insert rather than the receiver.
