Trigger breaking to low Empty Trigger breaking to low

Post by Magload Sat Apr 15, 2017 1:12 pm

Just picked up my 52-2 I got off Gun Broker and checked the trigger with my digital Lyman scale it is breaking at 1lb 13.5oz to 2.0lbs  That is to low for BE CF.  Isn't 2.5 the min?  I am not real consistant testing with the scale but I did calibrate it with known calibrated weights.  Can  boost the pull up a little?  Hate to do anything it is so smooth.  Don

I don't know anything about a 52. But Center Fire is 2.5# unless you're shooting a 45 caliber semi automatic which in that case is 3.5#.

Rule 3.2 NRA Pistol

the trigger bar spring and the sear spring is where you can look for more pressure. the sear spring can be bent a bit to help and a new trigger bar spring will  help.. I think the model 39 has the same trigger bar setup so it's spring would be a bit heavier.. Numerich used to have most of the springs.

If I use the 52-2 it would be in CF Match and if I am reading it right rule 3.2 covering center fire states 2.5 unless you are using a 45.  This gun's trigger pull is to light by at least 8ozs or more.  Got to fix that.  Suspect the spring is just worn out.  Don

I had the exact same problem. My 52-2 was a safe queen built in the 70's. No doubt every part on it was 40+ yrs old. I switched out the main spring and the sear spring(which was a challenge) and it's 2.75 Lbs. Be careful in there, S&W warned me they have nobody that works on the 52 and no parts.

That scares me and I am fearless.  We have no good gun smiths around here.  had a real good guy that was a BE shooter but he retired.  I replaced the fire control parts in my Mark III and 22/45 Lite plus two KC trigger assy in 1911s and think I learn a few bad words while doing them.  That is tough as spending 21.5 years in the Navy I thought I knew them all.  Don

The mainspring is easy and that might get you there. Similar to a 1911. But I had a hell of a time getting the new sear spring in! Try just changing the mainspring and see where that gets you. Numrich should have them. Fortunately there are several excellent sources of info on this forum if you run into trouble.
