Which 45? -Revolver? Empty Which 45? -Revolver?

Post by Russ OR 3/20/2017, 1:53 pm

The last two 25 yard 2700s I shot a 45acp 4" JM 625 revolver for CF and 45 (830-838, on par w/my current wad-gun scores).  If I didn't own a good wad-gun, I'd be happy to use this revolver for all matches, 25 and 50 yards. -  -- - -
With the hammer falling onto a small pc of rubber stuck in the hammer recess, I can do RF dry-fire practice.

Recently, FWIW, I rest-tested it @ 50 yards-1" ultradot (all 6 chambers-barrel on foam rubber on 2x4--Two 50 yard 6 shot groups (2½" C-C and 3¼" C-C) I felt my technique was off firing the 2nd group (yeah-sure).  ----
4.0gn Bullseye / Dardas 180gn fb SWC. / WLP primers / worn out brass - only load I've shot in it.
No brass catcher - no load/function/spring tuning.-pre-loaded moon clips. -- -.
More darn fun,  Russ

I shot the last outdoor in Springfield with my 25-2. Same scores as my 1911. And fun.

Glad to hear the 4" JM shoots good.  I always wanted a new 625 5" but I waited to long.  Maybe the 4" JM is just as good ?  Been giving these 625 JM's a lot of thought lately.

Hi Virgil,  I have a stls 5" 625 as well. - 8? years ago I was about to go to it for my match 45 when my thumb got injured. - 3 years ago I took a chance on this used JM625-it turned out to be a good one I think. - I wonder if the 5" is more accurate, but as I get older/weaker the lighter 4" barrel suits for me. - JM has a little better trigger too.

The bore of my JM625 looks odd(?) to me. Soft, not crisply defined lands & grooves. At firt I thought it was leaded, but very shiny.-  After good cleaning and two times on the Outers Foul out - no lead-that's just how it is. - I saw another JM625 at the range & asked to look at that bore-same as mine.

At my brother's suggestion, For chamber & bore cleaning, I'm trying Big 45 Frontier metal cleaner wrapped around a brass brush. I've used it twice & it worked well. - I'll try a copper pot scrubber soon & compare.

Russ that is just the news I wanted to hear.  As a JM 625 has been on the top of my need to have list for a long time.  Maybe next month.  I was going to use mt GP 100 for CF but am not sure it is the gun for BE.  Are you shooting SA even in Rf?  I am not a big fan of DA.  Don

That's my 1955 model.

I also have a newer 25-2 made about 1973.

Don,   Single action for all - inc'g Rapid Fire.  The rubber tap RF practice I do at home seems to do me as much good as live-fire.

FWIW:
The two 6 shot C-C 50 yard JM 625 rested groups (1st post) are correct & accurate. Those 12 shots are the only 50 yard testing I've done w/ the JM625..

YMMV. - Russ

Russ,

You must have one of the newer 625's that has the ECM  (electro-chemical-machining) rifling. Not cut like it use to be.  Lots of people have complained about the ECM rifling saying it's no good with lead but your shooting proves that wrong.

Thank for the report.

sounds like you got a good one I had one about 3 years ago it would not group any load I tried slugged the barrel and it was out of round sent it to S&W for fix got it back they claimed they fixed but still out the lands were not concentric with bore. about 8 inch was all I could get it to group at 25 yards traded it for RO all is well now.

Deerspy,  You did get a bad revolver. And there are probably more out there. --- Before I went to 50 yards, I rest-tested @ 25 yards - only 6 shots/6 chambers: 1-3/8" C-C. The group, re-located, could be 6 X.   - -The more I shoot this one, the luckier I feel.

I have a Model of 1988 that does very well at 50 ft but I've never used it in a match. I'm thinking about shooting a 2700 all revolver this summer:)

I picked up a used Model of 1989 625-4 a few days ago and am taking it to the range tomorrow for the first shots with it.  This model is pre-lock, post-JM influence, pre-JM branding, full underlug, stainless frame, and theoretically designed to shoot lead well.

It's bone stock as far as I can tell.  I'm not a huge fan of the rubber Hogue grip, kinda short for my hands.  I am thinking about replacing them with some Nills.

It came with metal moon clips, but I designed and 3d-printed some moon clips based on other designs I found on the internet.  They make loading nice, but I am curious how they will do under fire.

One of the neat things about the 25's is that unlike magazines, moon clips are cheap. Load everything up you need before the match and wait on the slow-pokes to load their magazines.

What refreshing posts!  A very rare discussion on revolver(s) is a good thing to see on this forum, that is primarily posting 1911 discussions.  I'm still working on loads for my 986 (9mm).

The 625PC uses a regular cut rifled barrel vs the newer rifling, i used one in last months 2700 match on the .45 portion.  Also used a 6" 586 for the Centerfire and it wore me down, both revolvers were shot single action. (Normally I use a .45 Range Officer, which is currently going in for rehab.)  I recently mounted a Ultradot using the Weigand scope base and haven't shot it yet, another 2700 is scheduled for this Sunday.. Planning to use it for the Centerfire and. 45

Moon clips or speedloaders, depending on the revolver, make reloading a breeze and actually makes a brass catcher kind of worthless.  With that said, dropping five shells into the cylinder still left plenty of time, now on that note a SAA might sing a different tune...  My first or second 2700 match a fella was using a SAA type revolver, he barely made the buzzer to fire his string

625s should be going for a pretty reasonable price. The 625 was the go to gun for IDPA Enhanced Service Revolver, USPSA Revolver Division, and IPSC Revolver Division. Now, due to equipment rule changes in each o those games, the 625 is functionally obsolete for all of them. I shot a friend's Model 625 at the ICORE International Revolver Championship and the thing was an absolute tack driver. I had a stage where five of the targets only had one hole in them. It took everyone in the squad to pressure the ROs to give me the appropriate score.

K
Does anyone have an opinion or experience With the JM version (nd the ECM cut barrel) versus the performance center version with the broach cut rifling?  For bullseye shooting.

I have the JM, I bought it years ago for ESR when I shot IDPA. Its very accurate, but.... with LRN bullets it leaded up. With LSWC it didn't, I cast my own, it was same lead, same lubrisizing die,  go figure... I had to shoot RN because when your reloading on the fly, the RN find there way into the cylinder quickly, where the SWCs hang up in the shoulder of the bullet.  I ended up just shooting JRNs.

I didn't like the gold bead front sight, its the same color as the IDPA cardboard targets, my old eyes would lose it. I put a HiViz front sight and it was much better.

Also, the JM grips were too small for my hands, and slippery, they had to go.

I had it out yesterday and shot some Bullseye target practice, I shot my 3.8gr BE under a 185 LSWC 1911 loads, and it was a pleasure to shoot. The heft of the N frame, was very taming. The shots were on call.

If were to do 45acp with a revolver I would first try to get a M25 - good ones are still around.

It was designed to be a bullseye gun.

Thanks KenO.  I am torn between the JM and the PC models, but saw a couple comments on another forum from others allegedly having leading issues with the JM  ECM cut barrel with lead reloads. I just like the matt stainless finish on the JM better than the polished PC version.

Funny this should come up today. I JUST measured the throats on my 25-2 and they're 0.455" I measured the throats on my Model of 1988 625-2 and they're 0.4525. The 625-2 is very accurate. The 25-2......working on it. I'm thinking bullets sized 0.454.
