High Standard Magazine Advice Needed Empty High Standard Magazine Advice Needed

Post by dsandula 5/17/2017, 6:03 am

I move between a S & W Model 41, Hight Standard E Hartford Victor and High Standard Hamden Citation and I'm averaging a 274 in 22.  Likely not a good strategy for getting me to the next level.  I'll likely settle on the Hamden Citation (with LSP scope mount & Ultradot 30mm) as it feels best in my hand, the trigger is . . . incredible, I can see a good shot best with it and it likes CCI Standard Velocity very, very much.

Now to my High Standard magazine question:  What do I look for on eBay or elsewhere to find honest to goodness HS Military magazines?  Numbers on the side?  Certain weld and stamping marks?  Follower type and color?  Red heel?  Steel heel?

What's a fair price for original HS Military magazines?

I'd like to settle on 4 original magazines in good condition.  I currently have 1.  That will likely take care of me for life.

I have had good luck when I had a Citation from the following link. Their magazines were legit Hi Standard magazines and could be tuned properly and maintain the set up. You also can order from the Hi Standard folks themselves. Buying off of Ebay is always risky in that you may get the mags that are knock offs and just don;t work as well. Not worth the money or time to mess with.

On E-bay I have found that the best way to tell if a mag is legit is to look for the 5 and 10 on the magazine. I have never seen a knock off with those numbers on them. This one and two others on ebay right now.

No, they may work right out of the box but High Standard magazines always need some tweaking to your gun and the ammo you use. It is therefore also generally better if you feed the same ammo all the time as it is often hard to get the mags to reliably feed multiple brands of 22 ammo. This has always been a challenge of the High Standard guns.

A little more info. The older original magazines have blended rivets. The picture below is of 4 different magazines that work for me. The two with my homemade extensions are what I use everyday. Far left is a original HD mag that I removed part of the extension on the base to fit military models. Next one is old military mag (pre red base). The two mags to the right are newer production but still older mags. Note the green followers. The newer mags have more green showing below the thumb knob then the older mags. All 4 were adjusted by Roddy Toyota and function perfectly with CCI SV. He did warn me that the mags to the right had softer metal and could go out of adjustment if I used them a lot. I just have them as extras in different pistol cases so I don't show up at a match with just one mag.

You're better off getting genuine factory mags & adjusting feed lips for the ammo you shoot . I've never had any luck with aftermarket H-S mags .

No, but it was interesting to see it run up in price during the last seconds of auction.

Based on this experience, it looks like original HS magazines in good shape are going to run over $100.

If you buy from H-S Collectors like Tom Dance , BNIB Military mag looks cheap @ $ 114 . Unfortunately H-S mags have gotten like S&W 52 mags , see one & get your money out or it'll be gone .

You are right about that I paid $130 for the last 52 mag off E Bay but it was brand new still in the original package and doesn't look like it has ever been in a gun.  Get them when you see them they go fast.  Don

Yep, saw that one this morning.  I'm the winning bidder right now at $81.  I've got one original magazine and one aftermarket I need to adjust.

That's funny. Kinda. I noticed the magazine 3 or 4 days ago and nobody was paying any attention to it. I threw out an 80.00 bid on it just for the heck of it. When someone outbid me this morning (81.00) I posted it on here. I didn't need it but would have not minded stealing it at that price. Smile Hope you win this one.

Interesting package on Ebay. It looks like it might be getting some attention now but you won't find this if you just type in High Standard magazines.

Buyer beware.  There are problems with mag 2 and mag 3 (L>R)
Mag 1 is the only one that looks ready to go.  But even it looks like it is repaired.

Using Jacks numbers. Number 3 looks more like a Browning magazine then a high standard. I don't see what is wrong with the other two mentioned.

#1 & #2 are nice originals.
#1 looks like the red base is glued back on.  I think I see glue.  Should be ok
#2 has a Houston base fastened but the toe is now double thick.
#4 looks to be a cadmium mag, a lot of which are swollen from rust bloom.
Even blue mags can have rust bloom in the lamination.
Rust bloom can narrow the insides too.

1 & 2 would probably give good service after fixing up.  Maybe even #4 if not fat.

I wonder if there's a small market for premium quality manufactured High Standard military magazines?

Triple K's, though plentiful and affordable are mediocre when put under the strain of a high volume bullseye shooters annual round count.  It would be interesting to learn the eventual retail price required to recreate the durability of the original magazines in today's world.  I'm guessing $100 retail.  I'd pay it for a sure thing that's brand new, rust free and fits perfect.  Hell, we're paying more than that now for the original "vintage" magazines!  (I'm beginning to feel like a an eBay High Standard Troll.)

Once set up with tooling and supplies, you'd think it would be a pretty good business for a one man shop.  To get started, you could buy most all the parts and concentrate on the sheet metal quality required, punch press & dies, press brake & die set up, spot weld, assembly and final fitting.

These are getting good reports.  In my slant grip guns, they work fine.  Not done testing in my Military grips yet
