Agulia standard velocity. Empty Agulia standard velocity.

Post by Mike38 7/23/2017, 11:50 am

My "go to" standard velocity ammo is CCI-SV. Works fine in my Benelli MP95. But, like most everyone else, I like playing around with alternate brands of ammo. I bought a box of Agulia sub sonic (1025fps) and a box of Agulia standard velocity (1130fps). I kind of expected that the Agulia sub sonic wouldn't have enough power behind it to reliably cycle the action, and I was right. So I tried the Agulia SV, and it worked perfectly. Matter of fact, I was either having a good day at the range this morning, or the Agulia is a bit more accurate than the CCI. But my question is, will the increased velocity of the Agulia at 1130fps over the CCI at 1070fps be something I should be concerned about? Will the additional 60fps cause problems down the road if used a lot?

I have thought about emailing DeAnna at Larry's Guns and asking, but I've asked them quite a few questions in the last couple months and don't want to bother her too much. They have always been very helpful, very nice people, but I don't want to over stay my welcome if you know what I mean. Thanks.

What problems down the road are you over-thinking of? Smile

Shouldn't make a difference at all.

Over thinking, you're probably right! So the stories go, shooting the higher velocity stuff in a pistol such as a High Standard will, over time, crack the frame. If memory serves me, the threshold is 1125fps, so this Agulia at 1130fps is actually high velocity by some standards.

FPS are what's listed on the respective web sites. I don't have a chronograph, so no idea of actual velocity.

I've shot a fair amount of the Aguila in my Pardini. To me (very subjective "feel"), it seems about the same as cci-sv , and a little softer that Norma tac. I just picked up some yesterday @Cabelas ($29/brick), so tomorrow I'll actually alternate mags to see if there's any noticeable difference.

That's either all the info I need, or meaningless. I don't know what I would do with accurate chrono data, unless there was a huge difference.

people are so worried about FPS and damaging their firearms...yet no one knows what the stuff was tested in or what it tests in their gun.  you generate more fps in a 28" barrel vs a 5" pistol.

I think the highest fps from standard velocity 22LR ammo comes from 14-16" barrel. Only high and super velocity ammo with more powder charge will benefit from the longer barrel.
Center-fire rifles with larger charge is different.

SAAMI test barrels are 24.000 inches breech face to muzzle.

Also SAAMI tolerances on muzzle velocities are +/- 90 fps.  Standard velocity is 1070 fps,  so...., an ammo company can load the ammo to 1140 fps and still claim standard velocity.

I am done with Aquila.  I've shot several cases in the past, however, this last case I'm now using has many, many fail to fire rounds.  Makes excellent ball and dummy practice, but definitely not for matches.

My new case of Aguila I just got has had way too many failure to fire rounds. Also inconsistent powder charges. But I did by it to train with.

We tested some Aguila Super Extra at the AMU this summer.
Disappointing is the correct description.   Luckily I did not have/buy more than a sample.

Well, by the looks of the less than stellar reviews, it's best I stick with CCI. I did recently read somewhere, that Aguila changed their priming compound from "Eley" to their own. Maybe that is the reason for problems? The Agulia I tried did say Eley Primed on it.

I tested it for the first time yesterday. Summary - useless.

Details - back to back testing with CCI SV. Aguila 'groups' 4 inches to the left @ 50 yds from my Nelson. Also - 60% of the shots are in a 3 inch group with the other 40% falling up to 4 inches out of that group. Confirmed by loading 2 mags with CCI and 2 with Aguila, shuffling them so I didn't know which was which and then shooting from a rest. I had 11 holes in the 10 ring, 6 on the 6/7/8 at 9 o'clock and 3 more scattered on the left of the target. They all stayed in the scoring rings. Whoopee. Now designated as rapid fire practice only. Worthless for competition.

I'm really disappointed to hear that the current Aguila isn't up to the standards of the .22 ammo of years past. It probably has something to do with cost savings at the expense of quality.

Just my way of doing things....but if I KNEW the stuff was bad , how would I determine when I was training properly?  That stuff would go into my "plinking" pile, not in a match gun.

I watch my red dot. My red dot tells me a story. When hammer drops and gun doesn't fire it tells me a better story than if it went bang. It's an unplanned ball and dummy drill. Doesn't hurt my feelings a bit. The ammo is accurate and cheap which means I can shoot more often. Quality training is always the goal.

This topic came up a few years ago and someone took out the bullet of a misfired round and reported that there was missing primer inside the case, as I recalled. My ammo was purchased about 5 years ago and although very accurate in my pistol, I also experienced some duds. If I rotated the round it would go off on the second try. To investigate, I also pulled out the bullet of a dud round. There was a small circular section of missing primer on the other side where the hammer pin struck the case. Otherwise 60-70% of the primer was still intact. What I don't know is if the missing section of primer was there during manufacturing or if it flaked off after the hammer pin struck the case. When I emptied the case, gun powder and red primer flakes came out. Any further insights?

I've been shooting Eley Sport for years and a new case of Aguila Super Extra SV (Aguila primed from their new factory) and I can't say I've had ANY click no bangs yet. Over 1000 rounds fired.

Rumor has it that Aguila built the new plant and improved their quality greatly. I'm curious what vintage the trouble stuff is from?

The packaging looks like this except it says "aguila primed"--not "eley primed"

Update to earlier (outdoor) test. Same gun, same ammo, same crappy trigger finger :-) - at 25 yds it's shooting reliable x-ring groups. Albeit 1.5 inches to the left of CCI SV. So for indoor winter league I'll probably use it.

I bought a bunch of Aquila SV from CMP back when it was available.  I Ransom Rest tested it in both my Hammerli 208S and my Marvel conversion.  It actually gave me slightly better groups then either CCI or Eley Pistol, but they were all under an inch at 50 yards.

I found with my Hammerli, I have to keep the chamber very clean.  It doesn't take too many rounds of Aquila SV before the bullet doesn't fully seat and I get soft hits and alibis.  When the Hammerli doesn't go off, it's because the round wasn't fully seated.  It always goes off with a second hit.  I don't have the same problems my Marvel conversion.

I plan to keep shooting the Aquila SV in my Marvel until it's gone.

Dirty chamber on my H208S was my first suspicion, but no. A friend suggested oiling the top of the first round of the magazine, and again it didn't help. The strike on the case was deep. Duds happened with my High Standard Military Victor also which indents the case deeper. I did noticed less duds when weather started warming up during the summer. My conclusion was that Aguilla SE has suffered from quality control issues. There is more lube film on the case than other brands of .22 ammo but the rounds appear to drop into the chamber just fine, but I think this could be one of the problems. I just use another ammo for the short line during a match.

I'm sure there is lot to lot variation in both CCI and Aguila. I tend to get more actual duds with CCI, but not that many (nothing like Remington).
