Beretta for leg match

Is anyone other than the AMU shooting Beretta's?

I will need to put my hands on one and see how they feel. Sounds like a reason to buy another pistol.

Only if you're willing to spend $2K + for an accurized version. The OEM won't cut it.

Why should it be any different then the 1911? You have got to love "service' pistol. It is like "stock" car.

Yes a stock Beretta is like a stock car, when was the last time you saw anything stock win anything? It takes a match barrel and tight lockup and good match ammo to get a Beretta to drop them in the black at 50 yards. It is much easier and cheaper to get a 1911 to be competitive in leg matches. Besides,many still hold that the 1911 is the only true service pistol, not that wimpy nato excuse in use these days.

You are right about that David. The Beretta isn't even pretty.

Competitors shooting Berettas are turning in all the winning scores at the big matches. I don't think that anyone would call the top shooters shooting them wimpy.

As someone who has owned and fired both, I have to say that I think the Berettas shoot better groups with ball ammo than the 1911's from a machine rest. I found the Beretta harder to shoot than the 1911, but it is less punishing to the elbow. After I got distinguished shooting a 1911 with factory hardball, I bought an accurized Beretta. I shot it some in EIC matches. I usually turned in similar scores to my 1911 and won a few medals with it. At 50 yards, the 9mm has to be driven very fast to get optimum accuracy.

I never said the shooters were whimpy, just the beretta, and compared with a 45 acp, how could anyone dispute that Those top shooters shooting the Beretta are shooting hugely and very expensively modified guns not the average service pistol by any stretch of the imagination.

And Mike you said accurized Beretta, that is the key there. I purchased a stock M9 and worked the trigger over put in the KKM barrel (then had to re cut the chamber correctly) to finally produce groups from my hand that I was happy with.

Before hurting my shooting wrist (chainsaw issue not shooting) shooting my pretty much stock Springfield (trigger work only) I could shoot better groups.

The M9 was less punishing but I had more time and $ in it than I had in my Springer. You might find someone willing to part with a Kidd, MCP or Sayler gun for $2k or more if you look around.

I never was able to really do justice to the accurized Beretta that I owned, but better shooters than I are really wringing them out for all they are worth. The top boys are shooting high 280's and low 290's regularly. I don't think that it is a matter of recoil, I think that it is that the Beretta has more accuracy. I never could get my ball gun to shoot much better than 4-5" groups from a machine rest with factory ammo from a machine rest. With factory wadcutters, it will shoot well under 3". Now that a shooter can reload his/ her own ammo for ball matches, maybe better groups can be obtained. I'm told that back in the day when ammo was issued for ball matches, that the military teams used to test ball ammo and what they determined was the best match ammo was issued out. If that is true then they may have been at an advantage over the civilian shooters.

Anybody interested in a full on comp, cmp Beretta built by David Sams, pm me and i will hook you up with a friend who has one that has moved on to rifle matches, price is 2k, but you might get him down a little, its a safe queen with very little shoot time on it.

Now that we can roll our own for the .45 it makes it a little more even. I tried a Sam's Beretta for about 9 months and still could beat it with my .45. Beretta is a little big in my hand and the trigger takes some getting used to if you have shot 1911 for so long.

You can't go wrong either way but decide what you like best before dropping the $$.

If I read the information correctly, if you take the Pistol SAFS before the national match at Camp Perry, you get to shoot a leg match with an armory issued beretta and issued ammo. It will give you a chance to see if you like the M9 for leg without buying one.

The Beretta is a superbly accurate pistol when well built. But, trigger control with it is slightly more difficult in my opinion. Guns with pivoting triggers seem to be harder to master than the 1911 trigger.

My scores with the Beretta are more up and down than my 1911 scores.

For CMP matches, by the rules, if you want to shoot 9mm, you have to shoot a Beretta. If you want to shoot .45ACP, you have to shoot the 1911.
